35 Cavan Street Dublin
« on: Monday 02 January 12 17:01 GMT (UK) »
I've found a 1817 Pro-Cathedral baptism record in which this address is given, but I can't find any reference to the street's location (north, south, etc.).

Can anyone help please?

Haven't ever come across a Cavan Street in Dublin.
Any chance you would have a scan or image of the entry?

did the Pro-Cathedral exist in 1817 ?

As far as I can tell it wasn't completed and dedicated until 1825...

Here's the St. Mary's RC baptism with  that address :

Baptism of Thos Downs - 30 Dec 1817

Certainly looks like Cavan St...

between 1797 and the completion of St. Mary's Marlborough Street, the old St. Mary's church on Liffey Street was assigned the status of Pro-Cathedral. Before 1797, St. Nicolas of Myra on Francis St. on the southside held the status of Pro-Cathedral.

The founding stone for the  Marlborough Street Church was laid in 1815, and first used as a church in 1823, even though it was unfinished. It was fully opened on the 14th Nov 1825 - the feast day of St. Laurence O'Toole.

back to the original question - the closest I can think of is an abbreviated Cavendish Row, which was at one time known as Cavendish Street and would be within the area covered by St. Mary's at the time. Only problem is the numbers - there are only 9 houses on the street in 1834. Although there could have been more at an earlier date..

Shanew's finding that St Nicholas of Myra would have had the title  pro cathedral makes what I found online more likely.Cavan street was mentioned on the links below and one of them mentioned  butter/big butter/boater lane as being near it and also 'great Kevan st(kevin street) so maybe in the Liberties area?

Edit; Sorry just noticed the mention of St Mary's(Pro cathedral)on the image.
so maybe I was on the wrong track after all.

Curiouser and curiouser....thank you for all the info, guys. The record is indeed the irish genealogy entry posted by Shane.
It's still a long shot, as the family seems to have been centred around Clontarf/Glasnevin.

I think it's most likely a misspelling of Kevin Street.

The following is from the Oxford Journal, Sat 1 March, 1788

"Yesterday morning, at Nine o' Clock, at the Commission of Oyer and Terminer for the County of Dublin, before the Right Hon. Mr Justice Kelly, came on the trial of Claude Dempsey (who formerly lived in the service of his Grace, the Archbishop of Dublin as Postillion) charged with the murder of Margaret Tighe, a maid servant and J Gardner, employed in the situation of Gate Porter, at the Bishop's Palace, Cavan Street, in the month of November last".

Checking out one or two other referfences to Cavan Street in the early newspapers
