There was a Bishop's place to the south east of St. Patrick's Cathedral - near the junction between Bride Street and Kevin Street. Very much south-side of the Liffey and would not seem to fit with the parish of St. Mary's which is North City.

The area could fit with the older Pro-Cathedral based in St. Nicholas.

Freeman's Journal 25 April 1820
"Mr George Dunn, the gaoler at Kilmainham prison, who happened to be passing by at the time in a gig, immediately drove to Cavan Street, and a party of horse and foot police stationed there repaired with utmost speed to the spot"

If you google "Palace of St Sepulchre" several mentions the Bishop's Palace Kevin Street and the Garda Barracks there. Is this where the "horse and foot police" referred to above were stationed?

regards

In 1923 there was a police barracks between numbers 41 and 42 Upper Kevin street. Next door neighbours include the Archbishops Marsh Library  and the Deanary House of St. Patricks..

I'll try to follow back and see how long it's been a barracks

looks more and more like dublin1850 was on the right track... Kevin / Cavan

also just found a mention of the Deanery house for St. Patrick being at 'Kevan Street' in the 1780s

  1885, 1848, 1840  - Horse Police Barracks

thanks for the details - accessing the article via google shows the page fine.

Interesting history re the palace/RIC barracks/Garda station... I remember seeing the ancient looking gate pillars, but never realized why before...

Now 95% convinced that Cavan Street and Kevin Street are one and the same, and Cavan was probably a variation used for a time.

The location being near to a bishops palace and a police horse barracks, and the similar sound of the alternate to the Saint it's named after :

Cavan / Kevin / Caoimhín  (the Irish for Kevin)

Of course it's completely the wrong side of the city for St. Mary's parish, but the early baptism addresses are from all over Dublin city, county - and beyond - e.g. Bray town, Harold's Cross and even for Tuam (Galway) and Cavan (town)
