James' parents are both dead, hence no address is given for them. Where this has been the case elsewhere on the page, def(unct) has been entered. In some instances, as here, dec(eased) has been written. The same word is entered after William, as Catherine's father is dead, but not her mother. The word in the column for the banns is ter = three times. The note at the end reads: These parties (being both Catholic) went before the Registrar about a year ago.

Graham.

Thats whats so great about rootschat...wherever there is queries such as those above, someone is always able to shed some light  ;D

Another baptism of interest

Name    JAMES MCKENZIE
Date of Birth    N/R N/R 1889
Address    1 GRATTAN COURT
Father    JAMES MCKENZIE
Mother    CATHERINE DORMAN
Child Denomination   RC
Sponsor 1   THOMAS MCKENZIE
Sponsor 2   CATHERINE NICHOL

I wonder if sponsor/witness #1 is grandpa?

I read another post lastnight re Irish roots which mentioned that sometimes boys can be the sponsors or witnesses for baptisms .... perhaps this is the Thomas who was Kate and James McKenzie's first born?

There was another Thomas McKenzie in the dublin church records about this time who was noted as father on his childs baptism, I had thought he could be a brother of James McKenzie, but parentage was different  ::)

Again I cannot express strongly enough my gratitude to you for your help. My mother is 86 and in extremely poor health. I want you to be aware that the information you have uncovered has brought a smile to her face. Be proud of yourself.
Gerry

Thank you Gerry, I am glad to be able to help you and your mum.  I have been tucked up in bed the last few days suffering with a chest infection, so it was lovely to have something to keep the mind active! Plus Celtic roots are always fascinating to me, just a shame more records are not available.

Kind regards

:)

interesting to see from the 1901 census that James was not the only Scots-born McKenzie in Dublin at that time

  • McKenzie   James   / 46   / Male   / Father   / R C   / b Co Edinberg   / Quay Labourer

McKenzie   John   / 55   / Male   / Head of Family   / Presbyterian   / b Scotland   / Surveyor Civil Dept Ordnance Survey

    McKenzie   Charles   / 54   / Male   / Head of Family   / Presbyterian   / b Scotland   / Plumber

Mc Kenzie   Thomas   / 49   / Male   / Head of Family   / Church of Ireland   / b Scotland   / Plumber

    McKenzie   Daniel   / 24   / Male   / Boarder   / United Free Church of S   / b Scotland   / Plumber

    McKenzie   Charles   / 23   / Male   / Son   / Presbyterian   / b Scotland   / Coach Trimmer

There was a soldiers barracks in Dublin (Portobello Barracks, Rathmines) at this time too with 65 soldier families residing - - a draw to the area for the aforementioned scots?  ???

James Connolly was also born in Edinburgh and joined the army where he served in Ireland
