1891 and 1901 lookup help TOMPKINS
« on: Tuesday 10 January 12 13:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I wonder if anyone would look up this couple for me:

Alfred Tompkins (born c.1843) and Sarah Tompkins (nee Cook) (born c. 1851)

I have them in 1881 aged 39 and 30 with children Alfred, Richard and Alice
Kensington page 28 , RG 11/42 (I think this is the correct number??)

I have found an Alfred Tompkins in the 1911 in an institution (don't know what) and am wondering if this is the same person, correct age, and on freebmd, there is a death in 1912.

So I want to see where there are in 1891 and 1901

any help much appreciated
sara

Hi Sara

I have had a look for you but cannot find Alfred in 1891, but I did find him in 1901.
He is living with his nephew called Haley Foodway who is 18 and a
greengrocer porter
Alfred is 58 and a widower and classed as a house painter born
in Clapton, London

The institution you mention is at Northumberland Street. Marylebone
This was a work house
This was somewhere people who had either no money, were ill, were old,  who had no family to support them, or even single parents, normally women, were looked after as support they could not get from elsewhere.
I looked at the list of people who were there with Alfred and they were
nearly all tradesmen of some kind, from all over the place, Ireland,
Scotland, different parts of England.
If poor Alfred died in 1912 as you mention, then he was probably at
the workhouse as he was at the end of his days. He would by then
have had a small government pension which was given to people in
about 1908 for the first time.
Maybe someone can find when poor Sarah died and maybe that was
Alfreds demise.  Many could not survive without their spouse.

Hi, many thanks for that information.
How do I know for certain it is my Alfred?  there are a couple of the same age?

I am surprised if he was in a workhouse but I suppose this happened back then.  I know his son Alfred was in the police force and died in 1902, his wife remarried.

do you have the reference number for the 1901 as I might go up to the library to view it.

I wonder where they are in 1891?

I could also clarify by looking for a marriage of a sister to a 'Foodway'

many thanks for the input

Hi Sara

I thought the name was unusual.  I cant remember during my
years of searching seeing a man called Haley and the surname
Foodway.  I dont think I have seen that either. Just wondered if
it could be a heavy accent mistake.  In those days people if
they didnt move around did seem to have a local accent which
might not be able to be understood by a person from outside. So
they just wrote what they thought they heard.
Bearing in mind alot of the people didnt read or write so would not know if if was spelt wrong or right  so no correction given.
You state "HOW do I know it is my Alfred"
You might have to buy his death certificate to prove it.
If you look for ancestors it is sometimes a guess unless the certificates
prove it worng.
