John kerr and agnes johnstone
« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 11:10 GMT (UK) »
Good morning folks I am hoping that one of you having an interest in the Kerr family trees of Dumfries can offer a solution to this puzzle. John Kerr was born on the 2/1/1786 at Mouswald Banks his parents were John Kerr and Jean Tweedie. John junior died at the age of 89 on 2/6/1872 Irish St. Dumfries. However on his death certificate it states that his mother was Agnes Tweedie and his father John Kerr. The age at his death cooincides with being born in 1786. Can anyone explain?. Thanks, stoop.

Hi Stoop  :)

The information given on a death certificate is not always accurate
If the info. was given by say his grandson it would easy for errors to occur
I have many death certs. that give incorrect info. , even one which gives the mothers name as that
of the fathers 2nd wife(i.e. stepmother not mother)

It's always worth keeping this in mind , if the death cert. is all you have , when searching for parents

Then again it is always possible that the Parish records are incorrect
If they were written down after the event then a mistake may have happened , but it looks like this
couple had many children and the mother was recorded as Jean
