Newspaper Articles
« on: Thursday 12 January 12 09:25 GMT (UK) »
Morning,

I am trying to find out if I can look at old newspapers online?

In particular, Im looking for anything relating to a case in Pontypool, which went to court, of a man (my great great uncle) shooting his father (Charles Morgan) which led to a prison sentance for my uncle.

This wasn't too long ago, probably between 1930 and 1950.  My nan doesnt remember a lot, no details anyway, just that her uncle was in Prison and that was the reason.  I'd love to find some old papers and get some information on it.

And if not papers, maybe there is a website or something that details such court cases so i can at least confirm times etc.

Thanks!

There is nothing from any regional papers for the area online at the moment, as far as I know. For these you would need to visit either the local record office, the National Library at Aberystwyth or the British Library Newspaper Library at Collindale.

There is a chance that other newspapers (mainly Welsh) would have reported on the case, and you could check these, but again you would have to visit your local record office (assuming that you live in wales?).

The Times is online, and it does carry a very short report. Not much detail, but at least it does give you a date to work from.

The Times, Monday, Apr 22, 1929

pg. 15; Issue 45183; col G

At Pontypool on Saturday, Victor Morgan, collier's helper, was remanded in custody for a week on the charge of the attempted murder of his father, Charles Morgan, by shooting at him at a lonely mountain farm.

Hi there. I've just picked up your post. Are you still looking for information about Charlie and Vic Morgan? I think my great aunt was married to Vic... and we lived just along the road from Charlie Morgan......he had a fantastic garden!

Hi there,

Not looking for anymore info on this particular thread as i found all i needed to but still researching in bits.

Vic was my grandfathers brother.  What was your Aunts name as I'm sure Vic married into my grandmothers side of the family (i.e. two brothers married two sisters)

My great aunt, Theresa (nee Edwards, )was married to Vic. Her sister, my grandmother, was Jessie Edwards and became Jessie Morgan although this Morgan was not related to Charlie and Vic.... We lived in Pentrepiod, just down the road from Charlie Morgan.....can remember eating lunch there once or twice, but cannot remember his wife's name....
