Hi, on freebmd Minnie Carter married William Prosser March quarter 1888...registered as Abergavenny. On the census returns I have for her,her name is listed as Minnie so I always thought maybe this was short for something else but if its listed as Minnie on the marriage in BMD then am I right in thinking it must have been her proper name?

On her census returns Im sure it says she was born Abergavenny but they are on my other computer but will have a look in a bit too.

Thanks 4 ur help, Lisa.

Lisa,

Ive been reading very intently!  My Great Great grandfather was a William George Prosser.

I live in Cardiff but my Grampy (Clynton Prosser) is from Pontypool.  His father, Clynton Dennis Prosser, is from Newport.  His father again, (my great great grandfather), was William George Prosser also we believe to be born in Newport.

This is as far as i've got with my line of equiries.  But I know the Prosser line started in Somerset and we've slowly moved west.  I wonder if there could be a connection.  I know we still have quite a large family down somerset way (I vaguely remember a family reunion some years ago).

Im sending off this weekend for my great great grandparents marriage certificate (she was a Maria Rees) so would be interesting to see!

Hi Amie, would be great if there is a connection. Did u follow what was written above?
My Prossers seem to have been born in Chepstow,Monmouthshire since the early 1800s but I know from what Wozzle had told me above that 1 of my William Prossers married a lady from Worle in Somerset...so hopefully theres a connection there somewhere....let me know what u find out n we can see if we are linked.
My nans nan came to Wolverhampton from Abergavenny about 1912 and thats where all her siblings then followed her to, so I dont think any of that line are left in Wales...they all came here (am in Wton myself).

Great to hear from u, Lisa.

Amie...meant to say maybe your Prosser line also came from Andrew and Hannah Prosser too...?

It may do.

I know my great grandfather was born in Newport in 1914.  That would put his father (my first William) being born sometime after 1885 at a guess.

Im wondering if the William Prosser on the 1881 census (the one aged 16) may have been my Williams father?  It seems people settled really early in those days so it could be possible that within the next 5 years (up to 1886) he couldve become a dad.  Would be great for me as would create a whole new part of my tree!  Will definitely be doing some digging this weekend now!

The William on the 1881 census aged 16 is my great-great grandfather. His children were all born Abergavenny Im afraid...of the top of my head there was William,Edith,adeline-may,alfred and wilfred I think...N they nearly all moved to Wolverhampton.

Your Prossers may come from either his father or his grandfather (William or Andrew)...???

Maybe. I will keep digging. Though the more I look the more I'm realising Prosser isn't as uncommon as I've always thought it to have been!

But if my line does turn back to an Andrew and Hannah, I will definetly let u know!

I hate to throw a spanner in the works but you said in your opening post that William Prosser was born in Trevethin. Is this not more likely to be him with parents thomas & Margaret (there is another William Prosser born 1865 in Chepstow)

1881

Thomas PROSSER       51      Crickhowell, Brecknock, Wales      B Smith
Margaret PROSSER      37      Llandenny, Monmouth, England
Thomas PROSSER      17      Trevethin, Monmouth, England
William PROSSER      15      Trevethin, Monmouth, England
Ellen PROSSER     12      Newport, Monmouth, England      Scholar

     Census Place    Trevethin, Monmouth, Wales

Do you have William & Minnie's marriage certificate to prove William's father's name. There are a lot of Prossers in the Abergavenny area. I have some in my family too

there is also a William b1870 in Trevethin parents William & Mary
