Fall from Horse.....but where ? Place-name help please
« on: Friday 20 January 12 15:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,

On my ancestor's death certificate from 1843, his place of death is give as:
"Dorlan Goch in St. Mary's Brecknock"

Does any one know where or what this is ?
He died following a fall from his horse.....could the name just refer to some topographical location?

I've been trying to find him in the 1841 census with no luck....I'd hoped an exact address would narrow things down, but now I'm even more confused !

thanks
Rebel

Hi
There is a Dorlan Goch in 1851, in Chaplery St Mary, Brecon.
Reference around HO107/2489  435/113

Best i can find in 1841 is Derlungoch, St John, St Mary, Brecon.
Around H0107/1371  5/49  24

Hope this might help,

Cathy :)

There is still a street in Brecon called Dorlan Goch.  If I can find an online map which is not subject to copyright I will post one for you!

Here is a snip from Openstreetmap which is not covered by OS copyright.  You will see I have typed 'Dorlangoch' in the bottom right-hand corner.  Currently it is a small area of housing facing the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, but I think in earlier times Dorlangoch was probably the area behind it.  I don't think this area was developed for residential purposes until the 20th century.

Hi Greensleeves,
thankyou for that.
I was getting nowhere with Google.

Does the name Dorlangoch mean anything particular in Welsh,I wonder ?

My ancestor was a Thomas Morgan...the 1841 census has roughly 600 of them within a 5 year either side birth year search ! Currently,I am going through the entries county by county to try and pin him down.
It would have been wonderful if he had been there in goddam Gorlangoch when the enumerator came passing  by!

thanks again

Thankyou Jimbach for the explanation.

And looking at the map that Greensleeves sent, the name makes complete sense....well,the riverbank bit,not sure where the red comes in,fishblood maybe ??!

I've just taken a walk down the road with the help of Google Streetview....only a couple of properties seem to be from the 19thC.

The chap was taken back to Caldicot to be buried there....but he's not in Caldicot in the 1841 either!

A lot of the earth in the area is of a red tint - from the old red sandstone that makes up some of the Beacons, so could be related to that
