Battiscombe Family

I am researching the possibility that the US Bascoms are descended from the
Battiscombe family of Dorset.  In Yatton Church
is a coat of arms of the Battiscombe family and we are wondering if it is the
same as the one that the US Bascoms use. It is gules, a chevron between
three bats, sable.  It lists several family members. I am told there is a tablet in Symondsbury church as well.  I am particularly
interested to find information about Thomas of Vearse Farm b 1602. I
am a descendant of Thomas Bascom b abt 1602 Dorset who
sailed on the Ship Recovery abt 1634 and was in the second company to land at
Windsor Connecticut. He was a mason. The origins of this Thomas Bascom are in
question. We have no record of his marriage or the birth of his daughter,
Hannah, who was probably born in England. His wife was Avis, we don't know if
she was the first or the second. The Battiscombe family that has communicated
with us from England has said that Thomas was of their branch, Vere's Wooton in
Dorset just inside Bridport, (Vearse Farm). It was purchased by John
Battiscombe from the Were Family in 1435 and sold about 1950.
 Most of the Bascoms and Bascom name variations were from
Dorset, Fordington, Wool,Yatton,or Coombe Keynes and other places.
I would appreciate any information about the coat of arms or records of Thomas abt 1602.  I have searched all of the Dorset Parish records that are on line.

Hi, I'm researching Battiscombe family from Bridport. One of my Oliver's married Mary Ann Battiscombe so have spent a few hours researching. Came across your request and found this page (10 'Bascom's') Unfortunately 1602 record is missing!

Francis son of Thomas BASCOMBE baptised 7th June 1605... Is this another child of your ancestor perhaps.

The Dorset OPC is quite a good site... guess you have already checked it out.

There is a good book on the Battiscombe and Bascom families, in England and the US

"A History of the Battiscombe and Bascom Families of England and America" by Geoffrey Battiscombe Barrow 1976

It does not clear up the connection of the American Bascombs to the Battiscombes of Bridport, but has some hints.  It will definitely give you all of the Vere's Wooton Battiscombes.

It also included information about the coats of arms of the various branches (variants of "a chevron with 3 bats displayed")

It also includes the Battiscombe-Oliver connection.

My closest Battiscombe is my 3G-Grandfather, but my grandfather's first name was Battiscombe, and it was my father's middle name.

I have my own copy of your father's book on the Battiscombes.

(I was thrilled to find my grandfather, Battiscombe George Gunn in the index, only to dicover it was in a sentence that begins: "Nor do I know what relationship existed...".  But I later got a copy of a supplemental tree from the Family History Society in Bridport which contains him.)

But there are seveal places where your father refers to additional research, which I cannot find.  I wonder if you know where it might be published, or otherwise available.

First, in

he says:
"The outcome
of my studies into the baronial and knightly family of Fitzwarin has been
to place in my possession more information on this family and surname than
possibly anyone else has ever thought it worth their while to obtain! Several
volumes resulted but, in the course of it, I am pretty certain that I have now
traced the ancestry and connections of Sir Philip, and now know that his
connection with Dick Whittington's wife is much more remote than I had at
first supposed."

I have traced Philip Fitzwarin through his father William, and grandfather Nicholas, but have not been able to get any further than that.  Do you know where his "several volumes" of Fitzwarin research might be available?

Second, in the Battiscombe book, and also in
"THE DIVERSIONS OF A GENEALOGIST" by Geoffrey B. Barrow, pg 107 - 109 in NORTH WEST KENT FAMILY HISTORY, September 1986 Vo1 4, No 3 http://www.nwkfhs.org.uk/nwkfhs-04-03.pdf
he refers to the descent from Edward I to  Mary Towse (died  1628), who  was the wife of Robert Battiscombe.  But there are several quite large gaps.  Do you know where the full details can be found.
