22 Highbury Quadrant, Islington
« on: Monday 23 January 12 00:40 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody know what 22 Highbury Quadrant Islington was used for in the 1940s.

I have found a relative living there in 1947 and am not sure whether it was a childrens home or a home for unmarried mothers.

Or was it a private house that housed at least 25 females at the same time?

Any help would be appreciated

See this BMJ reference from 1929 - page 1038, second column about 2/3 down http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2452564/pdf/brmedj07676-0044b.pdf

"For some considerable time there has been a hostel...."

Many thanks for your reply Shaun. Do you know if there is any way of finding out whether this address was still used as a hospital in the late 1940s?

According to Google Books this snippet is from a 1949 edition of The Almoner

http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=5hwHAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA204&img=1&pgis=1&dq=%2222+Highbury+quadrant%22&sig=ACfU3U2P4BP__EGZtec8aVtvMJdoJmWJ7w&edge=0

I can't find the hostel in phone books of that time.

It was certainly there in 1938 (the latest PO Directory I have).

There is a video on the Guardian site that details some history of Highbury Quarant. My parents lived on Petherton Road and much of that area changed in the late 1940s and mid 1950s, bomb damage followed by a clearence of old large Victorian houses that made way for a lot of blocks.

I have a picture postcard of the Hostel at 22 Highbury Quadrant.  From 1923 - so a bit earlier than when your relative was there, but thought it might be nice for you to see the place.  On the back is the words "the photo is the Hostel"  Sorry for the large images - some scrolling across is needed
