Joseph Smith....who was he?

Re I am looking for a Joseph Smith
His Son was born In Dumfries 1819 Kirkmahoe James Anderson Smith. Can you help me trace Joseph back to his mother and father. James went on to marry Agnes Scott in about 1841-1843 I think ..Help please

To try and  help with any searches, did Joseph marry a Janet Anderson? Children showing for them, all submitted entries on IGI include:

1. James Anderson Smith chr. 5 MAR 1818 Kirkmahoe
2. William Smith chr. 9 FEB 1820 Kirkmahoe
3. Jean Allan Smith chr. 5 APR 1822 Kirkmahoe

Have you found Joseph on any censuses to try and confirm his age/birth place?

Monica I have a marriage date of September 5th 1840 at Salmannan Stirling between James Smith and Agnes Scott
