Maindonald and Sparkes - Guernsey Census 1851, 1861
« on: Friday 13 May 05 01:20 BST (UK) »
Looking for the family of Daniel and Rachel Maindonald

Daniel born about 1800 - shoemaker in 1841 census
Rachel born about 1801 - laundress in 1841 census

Their children: Rachel (born about 1826), Sophia (born about 1829), Daniel (born about 1831), John (born about 1836) and Thomas (born about 1840).

All living at Mount Durand, St Peter Port in 1841 census

Also looking for family of Joseph and Mary Ann Sparkes

Joseph Sparkes gardener born abt 1811 England
Mary Ann Sparkes born abt 1815 England

Their children Teresa (born abt 1838, England) and Katherine (born abt 1841, Guernsey

Suspect that Joseph and Mary Ann had more children than this...

In 1841 census, living at St Peter Port.

Any information much appreciated

Michelle

KNow time has moved on considerably since your post in 2005 but if you're interested in detail on the Maindonald-Sparkes connection, I am a descendant living in New Zealand. Have a lot of information relating to the NZ arm of the family.

You may already have this information by now, but I am also a descendent of James and Ada and have a bit of information on the Maindonald (Maindonal) line.   Basically, Ada is the daughter of Thomas [m. Theresa Sparkes], who is the son of Daniel [m. Rachel Blondel], who is the son of Daniel [m. Rebecca Galliene], who is the son of Daniel [m Elizabeth Blampied], who is the son of Daniel [m. Rachel de Mouilipied] who is the son on Jean [m. Marie Thoume], who is the son of Josue Maindonal and Elizabeth Maugher who married in 16 April 1667 in St Martin.  Note that I have not done this research myself.  I have no information beyond this date.  I do have a photo of Thomas Maindonald and his daughter Ada.  I note from the census details above (1861) that Daniel (the Daniel who married Rachel Blondel) was living with his daughter Sophia. This would likely be because Rachel had died in 1949.  Daniel died in 1867.  Our Thomas was Sophia's little brother (and Daniel and Rachel's youngest child), and only 10 when his mum died.  He married Theresa in 1861 (age 21/22).  They had 3 children all born in Guernsey (Thomas, Ada and Francis).  In 1874 Thomas, Theresa and the 3 children sailed to NZ.  Let me know if there is anything else you need are interested in.  Melanie Whyte
