Halliday/Hallowday - why can't I find them in the birth records
« on: Saturday 28 January 12 09:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm searching for details of the Halliday (sometimes Hallowday) family in Wigtownshire from about 1807. So far, all I have to go on is census records, and I've found the family in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census records, with births for the following children in their respective years:

William: 1838, Mochrum
Agnes: 1840, Mochrum
John: 1841, Mochrum
Edward: 1845, Mochrum

Can anyone help me find birth registers or baptisms for these kids, or is it possible that they just didn't register the births?

Hi Ash  :)

Were the parents David Halliday and Eliza Gerrand ?

Edward Halliday baptised 11th March 1845 Mochrum Wigtown

Johon(this spelling) Halliday baptised 1st May 1842 Mochrum Wigtown

Searching here also gives birth dates for them -

Hey Ev,

The names I have for his parents are David and Elizabeth, but its Elizabeth Mitchell... this is from John's marriage certificate.

I tried searching familysearch.org with all the information I have, but no hits.

Why is this family being so frustrating!

I note on the 1851 census that Elisabeth Hallowday was born Penninghame c1807

Found on the 1881 census Elis. Halliday 78 widow born Penninghame Wigtown with John McMaster 13 grandson born Whithorn Wigtown

Sotlandspeople website has Elizabeth Halliday(other surname Gerron) death 1890 Whithorn Wigtown born c.1804

John McMaster Halliday birth 25th March 1868 Whithorn Wigtown
mother Agnes Halliday(no father)(IGI)

I went looking on the ScotlandsPeople website, and found a death record for David Halliday in Wigtown in 1866, which fits, as David was on the 1861 census, but not on the 1871 one.

However, on this record, it states his wife as Elizabeth Halliday - maiden name Gerron. This fits with what Ev found, but doesn't seem to fit with what was on John's marriage certificate.

Am I completely mixed up, or is there a good chance that John's marriage certificate is incorrect?

What other evidence do you have ?
Does John's death cert. give any further details ?

If John Halliday born Mochrum 1842 is on the 1871 census in Scotland then that could not be your John(married Matilda Yates 1866 Western Australia ?)

It's always possible that an error has occured on the marriage cert.

I was thinking about naming patterns for their children but looking at the index I can only see 1 child
(Matilda)

ev

Added - looking at the Trove newspaper site it seems they did have other children

I believe my John Halliday married Annie Bowden (nee Reece) in Sandhurst, Victoria in 1879. I haven't purchased John's death certificate yet, but something odd I noticed when I looked it up in the NSW indexes is that his fathers name is listed as William, not David.

John's and Annies children were named William, Agnes, Edward, Annie and John David.

Several trees online have the Mochrum Hallidays linked to John Halliday and Matilda Yates of Perth
Western Australia  :-\

Busy today so I'll have a look at John Halliday/Annie Bowden later , unless someone else wants to
have a look
