Marshall family, Shap 1700s.
« on: Sunday 29 January 12 19:16 GMT (UK) »
I've got the following from IGI:

Jane Bowness m William Marshall 13 Nov 1736 in Shap.
Children : Mary, Ann, Agnes, Jane, Thomas, William and another William, that last being bapt in 1753.

I have an ancestor William Marshall whose parents were apparently William and Jane from "Shapp" or "Shaff" (from Cheshire records). Died in Liverpool in 1834 allegedly 80 years old.

Obviously I think this is probably his family but don't know any way to try to prove this.

Does anyone have any access to PRs from this time to at least rule out the 2nd William also dying? Or to see if he married? The marraige that I know of in Cheshire was in 1797 so clearly he could have been a widower by then.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

Hi
There is a marriage licence for the William/Jane marriage that you mention and I can provide the details if you want them.  But it sounds as if you are trying to establish a link to this couple first.

The edenlinks site has the constables census for Westmorland for 1787 and there are no Marshalls.  (It's not a very common name around the Shap area.)  The window tax of 1777 for Shap had a Jane Marshall (question mark on the surname) which suggests that William senior might already be dead - probably in 1775.  There doesn't appear to be a MI for this family in Shap.

I don't have the PRs for Shap - sorry.
regards
Deborah

I'd be v grateful for the info re the marraige licence, and for the other info you've given here too. Even if it doesn't help with any link at the moment, who knows what clues might slot into place sooner or later?

I see I've made a note of possible death dates for William snr of 1775, and Jane of 1797, but I don't remember where I got those!

Diocese of Carlisle marriage licences:

13 Nov 1736
groom: William Marshal (marks) of Wetsleddale p Shap, yeoman
bride: Jane Bowness of p Shap, spinster
bondsman: Jonathn Bowness of Shap Townhead p Shap, yeoman
marriage to take place at Shap

The IGI (family search) has the burial of William in 1775.  I didn't look for Jane's burial.
regards
Deborah
