Savage family 1800s Maine
« on: Friday 03 February 12 05:36 GMT (UK) »
Dear Chatters
I am trying to find some more inforamtion about BENJAMIN BOSCAWEN SAVAGE

Benjamin was born about 1811, supposdly Maine area
Benjamin dies in New Zealand 1897

Some new info handed down is that he -
came from America aboard the whaling ship Eliza Jane in the 1830s and deserted in Suva
That he was: Shipwright, Whaler and Trader, of Wiscasset, Maine, USA.

There is also a story of links back to well known english family..which I am looking at separately.

Known that there was also another brother called STEPHEN, the mother died while children fairly young and father remarried..thus ending connection with Benjamin with father

Can anyone find evidence of who the parents of Benjamin are??
I have read some reports of famous Savage family in US who were boatbuilders and wondered if there could be a connection

any help or leads would be wonderful
Bye

My mother's Gordon line ties into the Savage family that came from Georgetown, Maine to Augusta/Hallowell in the 18th century. This line descends from Capt. Daniel Savage. He was born in 1729 and was the son of James and Christian Hunter Savage.

There were several heads of household in Woolwich listed in the 1790 census. One of the men listed was a John Savage. There is a birth listed in the Maine Births and Christenings 1739-1900 for a Stephen Savage. This individual was christened 14 July 1812 in Woolwich. His parents were listed as John and Sally Savage. He married a Sabrina Wood.

I've not had any luck turning up a Benjamin other than as a name occurring in the line of James and Christian's son, Isaac. Stephen wasn't a common name in Maine or at least not in my experience.

thanks walker
I am beginning to wonder whether Stephen was perhaps the son of the brother
becuase the brother came to Fiji and I don't think returned, whereas that Stephen stayed in the US

I suppose the only other option is that he was born in U then moved to Maine

the small snippets I'm going on link back to a John Boscawen Savage
http://www.archive.org/stream/ancientandnoble00armgoog/ancientandnoble00armgoog_djvu.txt
this book about the Savages of ard..seems to tie in with the references..but I can't see any mention of a Benjamin
are you connected with that line mentioned in the book

Yes and no. My mother descended from an Alexander Gordon who was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. He was deported to the Colonies following the Battle of Dunbar. This line intersects several generations later in Maine with the Savage family, namely the descendants of James and Christian Hunter Savage. It's not my direct line but I know of several Savage - Gordon marriages in the time period you are interested in.

There are several manuscripts, typewritten, on file at the Maine State Archives. The line I was thinking of would have descended from James' son, Isaac.

There's a fair bit on the Savage family in coastal maine here and there online.

I'm going to have a dig through the reference you sent and see about this John Boscawen Savage and get back to you.

The Savage family in Woolwich go back to Ireland for what it is worth but the reference you cite has deeper history than that.

Back in a bit.

New development, Benjamin may not have had a brother Stephen or at least one who travelled with him

Are you able to post any links for online records that I can search for Benjamin

Has anyone found where the 'Boscawen' from Benjamin Boscawen Savage (born 1811 Maine - 1897 Matata NZ) comes from?
Any chance Boscawen is the mother's maiden name?
I too am searching for the parents of Ben Savage.  I purchased his death certificate which just says parents - 'Unknown'. How annoying!

HI Jill
There is a lot of research that has been done by The Treasury, Thames - but sadly no luck also tracking back the boscawen link.
