Young/Jackson 1856 County Tyrone
« on: Sunday 05 February 12 21:14 GMT (UK) »
Mulnagore County Tyrone.  William Jackson farmer.  Father of Eliza Jane Jackson who married Joseph Young a teacher living in Belfast, but thought to originate from County Tyrone.  His father called Robert Young, also a farmer.  Eliza and Joseph married in Presbyterian Church Dungannon on 20th September 1856.  He was full age, she a minor.
Witnesses were william Jackson and Robert Young.  Any idea how I find out more about William Jackson and Robert Young?  Thank you.

Hi,
According to the Griffiths Valuation of 1860 William Jackson rented a house and 23 acre farm in Mulnagore from John Lindsay who seems to be a local landlord.

Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Thank you for that - it is very interesting.  I have not yet learnt how to find information in Griffiths, so am grateful for your skill.

There's a link to Griffith's Valuation (searchable by name or place) and many other sites under TYRONE RESOURCES at the top of this board-

Thank you for that.  I have found William James Jackson on 1911 census and it mentions grocer's shop too.  He may have been brother to Eliza Jane Jackson and son of William Jackson.

I have now discovered that a Joseph Young was born to Robert Young and Hanora Crowley.  This is a Roman Catholic record from Abbeyfeale parish, County Limerick.  It is dated 25th March 1830.  Sponsors were James Quirke and Mary Grady.  My informant believes that this was the only birth record for a Joseph Young son of Robert Young anywhere in Ireland between 1810 and 1836.  As it was stated that Joseph Young was a teacher on his marriage certificate, is there any possibility of finding out more about schools he may have taught in?  I do appreciate all the help you have already given me.

It may be the only record that seems to fit but remember that many church records from that period do not survive and many of those records that still exist are not online.

Thank you.  It has been interesting, however, to widen my search to Limerick, even if Joseph did not come from there!  I found a Robert Young in the Griffiths Valuation in the parish of Killeely.  This could be another red herring.
