You say Jack was born 1902 do you know where?

The Finnie 1956 at Woronora is not Finney.

Neil
Sorry Neil,
I think he was born in Sydney

Mentions in NZ papers:

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZTR19231013.2.45.1.3  Returing to Sydney after a good scrap

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=NZTR19250523.2.72&l=mi&e=-------10--1----0--

The last story says that Jack Finnie's photo was used by mistake on the programme with the name of Les Murray.   :o

regards,
  Ros
Ros - looking at the full pages was very interesting: I wonder how I can get a copy of the program cover ?

I am not really into boxing  Malsie but ...

Let me see it is the first night of the Wellington championships in 1925.

And this link says it is the only official website for amateur (Olympic style) boxing in NZ http://www.boxingnz.org.nz/page/news.aspx?news=1187
Perhaps you could contact them.  Or maybe Neil has some suggestions.

regards,
  Ros

 :D Thanks Ros,

I'm not into boxing either - nor football - nor cricket; but, because I have ancestors that
'shone' in these sports suddenly I'm exploring avenues - and others - that are very new
to me.
It is remarkable how quickly I have developed an interest - even in the surrounding
history/times that shaped these folk and that perhaps explain why they were the ppl they were etc.

I have sent an email to the association of your link !
Blessings,
malsie

Light Flyweight and these were his fights won 1 (KO 0) + lost 0 (KO 0) + drawn 0 = 1
rounds boxed 4 KO% 0

From what I remember he was into bare knuckle fighting.

He is in the book but I wasnt able to open it.

Sorry I didn't answer earlier Malsie - I have been away.

I got my info from this website http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=464571&cat=boxer

As for the bare knuckle fighting - lots of reading about the 1920's in Sydney and the Razer gangs.

ta Tedscout,
every little bit helps - to paint a picture

It is remarkable that those in my family closest to
J Finnie in relationship - dead now - all had biggish hands;
the males were particularly strong but not 'big' men -
I marvelled at this: not knowing of Jack.

Indeed, his cousin taught me some basic boxing so
looking for info on him I stumbled on Jack...I knew
there were 'Finnies' in the family but his criminal activity
wasn't known by the family's females - I have been told
by an older female closer related...actually, we told they all
liked to go 'dancing' on a Sat nite !

Jack Finnie is my Great Uncle on my dads side. We all have fairly big hands as well.
