Hi Bruce. Welcome to rootschat. Firstly, I think you should remove your email address (before one of the moderators moves it for you - there are worries about spam etc here on Rootschat)  :)

Now some questions which will help anyone who might like to try to help you:
Is Stamp Mary's married or maiden name?
Do you know her husband's name?
How old was she when she died?
Do you have any more information at all about her? Place of birth for example? Children's names?

I am just trying to work out exactly what you already know about Mary (as you must have got her name from somewhere), and what you are hoping to find out about her.

Ruskie:

Thank you for the suggestion re my email address. I have already taken care of that.

Mary Stamp was her maiden name. Her husband was John Darby, the father of William Darby (alias Pablo Fanque, circus owner and performer). She was born in 1769 and died in 1825 at the Norwich Workhouse. She had 6 children-- Wiiliam, John Richard, Robert, William, Elizabeth, Mary Elizabeth and Savy.
I am interested in her admission to the workhouse and anything else about her experience there.  I have no info on her parents or place of birth but but welcome such info.

Have you seen this?:
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Norwich/

It might give you a bit of insight into the conditions in the workhouse. I don't know if there are any details of specific inmates or any surviving admission registers (apart from those on the 1881 census), but someone else may be able to help you.

I had a quick look on the IGI for Mary's birth but it's difficult to know which, if any may be yours - she may not even have been born in Norfolk ....  :-\ Did you deduce her year of birth from her age at death?

Hello Bruce,

You may already have seen this - the entry of Mary and John's marriage in 1791, at St Stephens in Norwich.  It's interesting that Mary was able to sign her name - which indicates some form of education.
She is one of the few who signed on this page of the register.  The witnesses don't seem to give any clues - one is a Wm Leech, who appears to be a "professional" witness, and the other Thomas Purvess?

Parents ROBERT/ELIZABETH
Sibling;
ROBERT 05 August 1770
(Source FreeREG)

Marriage;
Robert STAMP, Single
Elizabeth ENGLAND, Single
08 June 1767, St Andrew, Great Ryburgh, Norfolk
Witnesses Philip Kendall, Elizabeth Brett
Groom signed with X, Bride signed her name

Marys Burial is on there also.

Hello again,

I've been reading about Pablo Fanque - what a fascinating story!

I know on the Wikepedia entry, Pablo's (William Darby's) biographer states he was  born in 1796 - but he can't have delved too deeply, because it seems that particular William Darby died a year later -

Much more likely that William was born later, as suggested, in the Workhouse.

There are many Norwich Workhouse records available free to view online.  I've had a very quick look, but there are so many pages!
