Hi Roger,
Good luck with the book!

All this is taken from a book written by the great grandson of James Ogilvy of Coodham, grandson of James Ogilvy Reginald of Myres. (confusing!!)
The book says:
"James Ogilvy Fairlie, 3rd son of William Fairlie and Margaret Ogilvy was born in Calcutta. His birth was registered on 11th November 1809 as No. 156 in Vol. 8 of the Church Register of St. Andrews Church at Fort William, Calcutta. He was a Lieutenant and then a Captain in the 2nd Life Guards. When his father died in 1825 he was not able to claim his inheritance wheich was in trust until he reached the age of 25 years. His mother sold their London home at 9 Park Crescent after she had built a mansion house for her son James Ogilvy and herself, in Ayrshire, not far from her brother-in -law's house of Holmes. She chose a site at Symington which is two miles South of Kilmarnock on the Ayr road. On 6th October 1828 the foundation stone of Coodham house was laid. It was completed by 1831 at a cost of £20,000. James Ogilvy inherited Coodham on the death of his mother in 1845. On the death of his cousin Lieut. Colonel James Fairlie of Holmes in 1860, Lieut. Colonel James Ogilvy Fairlie of Coodham took over command of the Ayrshire Yeomanry. He was succeeded in 1869 by the Earl of Eglinton and Winton, who in turn handed over command in 1872 to Lieut. Colonel John Reginald Houison-Craufurd of Craufurdland, brother of James Ogilvy Fairlie's second wife. James Ogilvy Fairlie was a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Ayr."
This is the most accurate information I have from the family. I hope it helps. St. Andrews golf museum has a lot of memorabilia from the Fairlie golfers!
