Newspapers Corwen
« on: Monday 13 February 12 22:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I'm looking into a distant branch of the family who lived in Corwen from the 1870s to around the 1950s. It appears that a son of the family, Thomas Lloyd Jones, was appointed a Sherriff of Merioneth (not a High Sherriff). I think he died in 1954 and I was wondering if there would be an obituary of him in the local paper.

Can anyone give me the correct website to contact please? I'm trying to find a local history library but am having difficulty!

TIA

Judith

Hello  :)

Merionethshire newspapers are available at Meirionnydd Record Office, Dolgellau.

I imagine that the obit would be in the Corwen Times.

Kind Regards
Morgan

There are some references to his position as Sheriff Of Merioneth in the archives of the London Gazette in the years 1932 to 1934,and possibly one for his role as liquidator to a coal merchant in 1920.
If you are uncertain about the date of his death,it might be worth considering a registration in Wrexham in the third quarter 1950.This could be a Thomas Lloyd Jones aged 78 tying in reasonably with a birth date of 1873,consistent with BMD and census records.I think registrations for Corwen were split after the 1930s with some in Wrexham.Perhaps others could advise on this.

Roger

Hello Roger,

I found out about his being a Sherriff, from googling.

I do need to do a bit more research into his death because from past experience with other archives/libraries I know they're not too happy if you just give them the quarter as they have to search all the papers. If I can narrow it down to a month that would be helpful. The website of Carrog church shows a gravestone for his parents and two of his sisters, but nothing for him.

Regards

Judith

There is a more likely(?) death record in 1954 under Merioneth East aged 81 which would fit.
Did he marry?
There is a record of Thomas Lloyd Jones marrrying Mary Ellen Atkinson(?) in 1914 in Gwyddelwern. He would be 40ish and she 20ish if I have identified her correctly from earlier census data(born 1893?).There is a death of Mary E Jones in 1956 aged 64 also Merioneth East.
Perhaps,if a couple,they are buried together.

Roger

Yes, it was the 1954 death I was considering. I found the marriage and wondered about that as well, it's very difficult when you don't actually know anything about these people and only have names to go on, but that's the fun of genealogy. There may even have been children.......

To have any degree of real certainty you need source documents and sometimes this involves speculative purchase, having done as much"googling" as you can.

Corwen is in Denbighshire but is situated on the border with Merionethshire.
Denbigh record office at Ruthin (tel 01824 708250) may be able to help with newspapers.

Check FreeBMD: Thomas L Jones died aged 81 in the 1st qtr of 1954
Merioneth 8c/2

This record is now with the County of Gwynedd. I had a look under the North Wales BMD, but it does not appear to be transcribed
You can then write to the registrar for a copy of the death certificate at:-

Galw Gwynedd
Unit 2 Eryri Business Park
Penrhyndeudraeth
LL48 6LD    Tel:  01766 771000

Hope this helps;
