Reilly / Murphy in Drumlish Longford
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 18:30 GMT (UK) »
This site is a wonderful read..   I am looking for parents of Rosetta Reilly b.1876.
The Teutonic Ships log shows arrival in May of 1895 and last town lived in was Drumlish. Sometime later she traveled to San Francisco.
I believe she had a sister based on an aged letter (unknown date). I saw the letter some 20 years ago.
An 1910 or 1920 California census report stated mothers maiden name as Murphy.

Welcome to rootschat  :)

There is this birth for a Rosetta Reilly
1874  Longford  Volume   13  Page  225

You can send for the certificate: http://www.groireland.ie/ and this would give you her parents names

Family Search has a baptism 1874 with parents James Reilly and Eliza Manning  :-\  also siblings Francis and Bridget

I realise this may not be your family but Francis Reilly travelled to Brooklyn to cousin Peter Reilly in 1904.

Thanks, I kind of ruled this one out since she listed her mother's maiden name as Murphy on a census form. I wonder if they may have moved between 1876 (birth) and 1895 (ships log) and thus my limitation of Drumlish is too narrow a search.

I've never seen a U.S. Census form that listed a person's maiden name- are you sure it is a census record that has this information?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

This Francis is perhaps too young. Unfortunately, the ship's manifest for Rosetta is misplaced. Have you managed to get any details of her journey- who she was going to for example?
What about her marriage details? Does she give a father's name?

I'm sorry, you are correcr, it is not the US Census, the California Death Record is the source for the mothers maiden name = Murphy.
The Teutonic Ships log shows a New York arrival May 1st of 1895 and shows the last town lived in was Drumlish.

I eventually found the manifest but no further details  :( often, there is a destination address which may be a relative and can help research.

For example, in 1897, a Kate Reilly (Drumlish) is going to a Manning cousin in Brooklyn. The entry below is a Delia Reilly, 20 yrs from Drumlish going to San Francisco and is marked as a US resident.

It could be possible that the informant didn't know her mother's name.
Was there an obituary naming any family?
Is there a record of her father's first name?

Thank you all, this is great information and guidance.

The Delia entry could very well be helpful. I will look for that first name in the local census.
I'll also look for an obituary.

I'm making slow progress with Catholic church records in Daly City, a suburb of San Francisco where she lived for the last 50 years of her life.

A side note as you may know, San Francisco closed most of the cemeteries after the 1960 earthquake that devastated the city. Most graves were then established in Colma, a city in San Mateo county.  Daly City is right in the middle.  Thanks again so very much.
