Re the journey - as the death was registered in NSW it would be most likely that the accident took place in NSW, although perhaps he was taken to hospital in NSW (Albury).  I have relatives who live near Wodonga and have some deaths/births registered in NSW as the deaths/births were in hospitals in Albury.

Unfortunately TROVE images finish at 1954 for many newspapers.

They were travelling from Sydney to Gunbower Victoria where Harcourt's parents are holidaying.

There is an article in SMH April 9 1955.   Just pm me if you would like it

Possibly this relates to the accident:

Peter's death occurred on 8 April 1955, which was Good Friday that year. Apparently it was an exceptionally bad year for the Easter Road Toll, very sad.

Yes Maddy very sad - there were 7 deaths and 30 injured on NSW roads - this was the main heading on this article.

I have blotted out the driver's name so hope it is OK to post here.

Ros

adding : The article appears below
as well as the main heading for the series of accidents

Yes Jane it was horrific and amazing that anyone survived.   It must have been a traumatic experience for your Mother.

Hi Jane and Judith,

Nice to receive your interesting follow up....
No Jane Im not related to John Harcourt...
In reality Im a retired Architect and for 40 years lived in Eltham surrounded by 15 or so of John's pioneering rammed earth and mud brick homes.
I have had an opportunity to correspond with one of John's daughters,(by his third marriage),Nickolina. Regrettably she knows very little of John's earlier life.
Not really sure though if Ill ever get to complete my book on John Harcourt.
That newspaper report of Peter's tragic accident fills in a few gaps for me. Really good find Ros.
Best wishes,

Wayne

wgl220 I would be interested to chat with you about your John Harcourt research and book idea. Where are you based? I'm in Melbourne.
