Given we saw MCKELVIE as a spelling variation (phonetically it works!) for Janet's 1832 birth or christening entry above, wondering whether this could be Joseph's death or burial entry in the OPRs:

Joseph MCKELVIE, aged 41
15/12/1837
Ref 644/1680 116
Glasgow

Found them now for 1841. No sign of Joseph, adding to a possible early death for him around the time William was born from what we had above/

Family I think indexed as MCILNEHEE  ::)

Jennet McIlnehee 38 Sp Dealr (spirit dealer) b. Scotland (ie not Lanarkshire).
James McIlnehee 15
Margaret McIlnehee 13
Jennet McIlnehee 8
Marry McIlnehee 6
William McIlnehee 4

Address: No 7 Muirhead St, Gorbals

Post 1855 and the start of official registration of BMDs, entries easier to find...

There is a death in 1883 in the Camlachie area of Glasgow for a 71 year old Janet. The following surnames are also indexed for this entry: LORIMER, DUNN AND MCELWEE.

Scottish death certs normally include the names of a deceased person's parents, letting you work back to the next generation (if known to the informant reporting the death).

Thank you so much for all you help Monica! It’s been just amazing. No wonder I was going around in circles, that spelling just gets more and more unusual.
I can’t thank you enough!

Hi Margaret,

So happy you found the updates as your message reminded me of the new information which I'm looking forward to revisiting.
William is my Fourth Great Grandfather - It goes, William, James (Jim), James William, Isabel, Betty, Annette, Me.
I also just received a package of photos and information from my grandmother (Betty Burke, nee: McElwee). It includes a copy of a newspaper article with a picture of William Joseph in it and a long letter written by George Johnston.  Would you like me to email it to you? If so, could you please let me know your email address? I'd love to compare notes!

Cheers, Sophie

Sophie !

Such a speedy response ... most wonderful.  I had your line as far as Betty.  I’m William, William, George, Reginald, Valerie.  Am currently on hols in tasmania so my family tree investigations have peaked.  I walked past the McElwee’s at Carr villa a couple of days ago ... they didn’t mind I was only passing through.  I would love to see all you have and esp George’s letter ... I remember meeting him when v young (with my grandfather Reg McElwee) and he was so very old.   Once i’m Home I can share all I have McElwee wise but in the meantime my email is  marg-r@hotmail.com
