Hi again, looking at the 1871 Census I note he was born in Appleby, so working backwards we have:-

1861 Census

Isaac Bowman aged 18 occ Agricultural Servant b Appleby, is working for John and Elizabeth Newton at Town End Farm, Hackthorpe, Lowther.
Census Ref RG09/3962/22/4

1851 Census

Isaac aged 8 and Robert aged 1 are shown as Grandsons to Stephen aged 54 and Ellinor aged 54 Bowman at Burrels, both shown as born Burrells
Census Ref HO107/2439/184/13

Following Robert into the 1861 leads to this return:-

Elleanor Bowman 67 Widow
Robert 11 Grandson
Ann 3 Grandaughter
All born Appleby
Residing at Burrells
Census Ref RG09/3956/39/2

Thank you for the information.

On Familysearch I found a baptism for an Isaac Bowman of Burrells in Appleby in 1843 which would fit our Isaac perfectly. The only parent listed was Mary Bowman.

Also on Familysearch I found Stephen and Eleanor's children born between 1822 and 1842. As grandchildren of Stephen and Eleanor Isaac and the other two from the censuses Robert and Ann would have to be children of one or more of these.Because of his dob and the mention of just his mother it would seem likely that he was the illegitimate child of the eldest daughter Mary who would have been 21 when he was born. The next eldest was Stephen who was 18 and the rest were too young to be Isaac's parents. The parentage of Robert and Ann is less certain. I don't know how likely it would be that they are Isaac's siblings?

Hi again, well searching for Ann in the 1871 shows she is now an orphan aged 12 staying with Elizabeth Lambert and family at the Crown Inn, Bolton, Westmorland. Census Ref RG10/5274/46/6, and Robert is in Hartlepool as a boarder Census Ref RG10/4914/4/2

It's a shame neither of them was found with family. I guess we may never know how they fit into the jigsaw.

I can't find a baptism for either of them.
