boatmen, Lincoln
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 22:22 GMT (UK) »
I have recently come across a family of ancestors living in St Marks, Lincoln, and the men in the family were all involved with boats (not something, as an outsider, I had associated with Lincoln).William Jones in 1841 was a waterman, and on his daughter's wedding record (1847) was a boatswain. One son, Paul Jones, was in 1871 master on board The Exchange, at Burton-on-Stather (in 1881/91 he had become a coal merchant); the other son, Elijah Jones, in 1861, was master of the Two Sisters (I could not work out where it was), with his wife, 2 crew, and 4 young children. Can anyone give me (or point to sources of) information about Lincoln's boatmen in the 19th century? Are there any possible sources of information about specific boats such as The Exchange and The Two Sisters?
Many thanks

In case you haven't seen this, a bit about the history of Brayford Pool in Lincoln:

I don't know of anything online that matches what you are after, but you could try asking Lincolnshire Archives:

There is a microfiche available from Lincs FHS which has
a] Boatmen and boatowners Lincoln city register 1795
b] Lindsey boat register 1795
c] Lincoln city reports on canal boats 1877
Might be of help -- only £1.00
