I've turned a full circle, there are too many coincidences for the Grimwoods not to be the Greenwoods. I've now got to retrace and check the marriages as Burns and Sewell. If she returned to the island after losing her second husband, could she have entered on any later census spinster rather than widow as this is what appeared on her death certificate. My original quest is not helped though because I have not come across any family links in Cumberland.

The person who emigrated to USA was Edith Gertrude Grimwood. There are a few passenger lists for her she appears to have visited relatives in England a number of times. She was born in Colchester in 1874 to William B Grimwood and Maria Coveney, she had a brother called AW (Albert William) Grimwood who is mentioned on at least one of these passenger lists, one that I viewed on the Ellis Island website. This is Edith Gertrude Grimwood and family on the 1881 England Census:-

Thanks Blue, but I'm sure this is not my Edith.

I applied to Cumbria for the marriage certificate of Edith Grimwood and Alfred Burns. They were unable to supply me with one without myself naming the Whitehaven Church in which they were married. Although they were able confirm they were not married in a Registry Office. I'm relatively inexperienced in these searches, can anybody advise me where I might find the name of the church. I've no subscription at the moment but willing to invest in one that would help.

The English death index must be for another person. It looks like Edith reverted to her birth name and went to live on the Isle of Man and died there. Last time I was on the island I visited the Probate Registry and viewed a will of a relation. You could search for a will. It's something you could try to get more information about Edith's life:-

can't help with family but key place for research is MNH library at the Manx Museum in Douglas -
 opening hours now 10am to 5pm Tues to Sat (note tho Museum open on Mondays the library is closed)
they are short staffed tho very helpful but can't do your research for you

re Whitehaven church - marriages often well reported in local newspaper - l
ikewise might be worthwhile searching for name in the Manx papers
