My great grandfather Alexander Elliot was born at Langholm to Henry and Janet about 1850 .He left home as a young boy travelling to Australia and after some years onto New Zealand.I'd love to know about Alexanders family and desendants in Scotland?

Welcome to Rootschat!   ;D

Did the names of Alexander's parents come from a death certificate? If so, did it give the maiden name for Janet?

I can see a Henry Elliott in Langholm 1851, but he is unmarried & still with his parents, David & Isabel. Also, he has brothers Alexander, David & James. Can't see any of this family in 1861, so possibly they all emigrated.

Thanks for your replies .Alexanders New Zealand marriage cert. shows his parents as Henry and Janet ( I think nee Halliday). Family stories tell how Alexander was banished from home at about the age of 10 and was assisted on his journey to Australia by a seafaring relative. This maybe true or may have been embelished over time.

Alexander was married at Invercargill NZ to Clara Wickens  on 10th Mar 1889 ,he was 39 and she was 32 .We have no firm info .on Alexanders early life ,family or siblings. Our info says Alexander was born at Langholm maybe they moved from this area?.Found a record of an Mr A Elliot arriving at Bluff (the port near Invercargill on the ship Tararua from Melbourne in Dec.1869.Nothing  any earlier than that I'm afraid.

From Langholm Archive Centre's transcription of the Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser:
1877-12-19
People
Death at Napier, New Zealand on 5 October 1877
Henry Elliot, sheep farmer, formerly of Lymiecleuch, near Hawick

There's 12 records obtained by putting in "Henry Elliot" into the name box here:
http://www.langholmarchive.org.uk/lookup.php
but no hits for Janet.
