Deeds Indexes now on-line (Archway)
« on: Sunday 26 February 12 02:23 GMT (UK) »
Archway have recently uploaded digitised versions of the Deeds Indexes. Their on-line catalogue is available at http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/

I have only used the Otago Deeds Index. The quickest way to these is to go to Advanced Search  then Records. In the Accession box, enter D591 then press enter or search.
By scrolling down the page, you will go past the Otago Grantee Nominal Indexes to Deeds. You can search these by names of landowners (they will give you a Deeds Index reference).

Or scroll down your search results page further and you will come across the Otago Deeds Indexes.

These Indexes list the sequence of transactions against a piece of land. The Deeds Registers (not yet digitised) are separate volumes that contain handwritten copies of the entire Deeds.

I have located land owned by my great-great-grandparents and obtained copies of Crown Grants, Conveyances (land transfer documents), Mortgages and other documents. If unable to visit Archives, digital photographs can be ordered.

I have found Archives to be very helpful and the results most rewarding.

Yes, I thought the information well worth passing on. The Deeds Indexes relate to land transactions which took place prior to about 1906 when the present Certificate of Title system started to come into being.

Hello and thanks.

Was advised at the Fair, at Hamilton, last August, that they were not far away from coming on line, but was unaware that that is now the case. Now I know more of where our family were. I will be able to add to the ones [indexes & then deed copies] I found over three days of research in the deeds office, 30 years ago.

Great to hear that you too, have found the new avenue for research to be useful. Even without obtaining copies of the actual Deeds, you can find the transactions relating to the land of interest prior to about 1905/6.

Hello.

As stated above I discussed the coming on line of deeds access with a man on the Archives stand at the Fair. At this time just indexes, but from the information therein, it should make it easier for finding historic deeds of interest, and in association with the new NZSG Land Titles Search facility, open up a whole new field to the general researcher. In the past if you were not familiar with our cadastral system of recording land tenure, it was ever so easy to get lost, and to order a copy of a land title, only to find the one you ordered, was miles away from the one you wanted. Done that several times. Now if you can place the property/building of interest, on a Google map print out, the NZSG service can locate the title history for you. Deed copies remain just a little more difficult to accurately locate.

From a quick look last night it would appear that a good broadband service will help. As explained to me the data in it’s original form is in fairly large files, that take time, though they were hoping to install a programme that would speed things up. BCAT & BAJZ appear to be the Accession box prefixes for Auckland ones.

ATTACHMENTS
#1. The graphic supplied at the Fair illustrating what has been digitized
  • and what has to be ordered from, or viewed at, the holding archive.

#2. Part of one of several deed titles I was able to locate, and get copies of some 30 years ago from Lands & Deeds. This particular one is of special interest to me, because I found it through one of the bound indexes, but then my research stalled because, I was unable to find Searborough Terrace off Epson Road Auckland.  Just a few years ago while on the Auckland Library site, checking for road name changes, it’s Google search engine asked me a fuzzy logic question “Was I searching for Scarborough Terrace ?”

Some times it pays to be an Aucklander. Had I been, the penny may have dropped !
