Are the dates for William or son James?

Do you have any additional info - William/James wife's name, his occupation etc?

As you have an exact birth and death year, have you downloaded any certificates? If so, there should be additional info there and this would help in trying to find the family.

Hi Anne, Just to clarify:

James Dawson, my GGGrandfather, was born in 1824 in Clackmanan. He married Charlotte Robertson, born on 11 Nov 1848, in Bothkennar, Linlithgow on 23 June 1828. He died on 20 July 1868 Falkirk. Death Record GROS 479/02 0092 where only his father, William, is given. The informant was his son William. James' profession was given as Farm Manager.
1861 census he appears as a ploughman at Easter Glen in Glen, Falkirk.

Could this be James in 1841?

James Dawson, age 18, born c1823, Clackmannanshire, living at Carsebridge, Clackammanshire, Civil Parish of Alloa.

Also living there were: (Transcriptions - so may be wonky!)

Janes Lipe, Male, age 68, Independent, born c1773, Clackmannanshire
Fany Lipe, Female, age 45, Pensioner, born c1796, Clackmannanshire
Robert Dawson, Male, age 14, born c1827, Clackmannanshire
Fany Dawson, Female, age 10, born c1831, Clackmannananshire
Charles Dawson, Male, age 7, born c1834, Clackmannanshire

This looks like the same family as above in 1851: (but no sign of James)

Living at Carsbridge/Cambridge?, Clackmannanshire

Frances Dawson, Head, age 51, born c1800, Alloa, Clackmannanshire
Frances Dawson, Daughter, Power Loom Weaver, age 25, born c1826, Alloa, Clackmannanshire
Robert Dawson, Son, Engine Keeper, age 23, born c1828, Alloa Clackmannanshire
Charles Dawson, Son, Coal Miner, age 17, born c1834, Alloa, Clackmannanshire
James Fife, Pauper, age 89, born c1762, Alloa, Clackmannanshire

'Janes Lipe' must  be James Fife, so possibly the father of Fany/Fanny/Frances?

Doing a further search in the IGI (familysearch), the above James was the son of Robert Dawson and Frances Fyfe. (Providing this is the correct James Dawson of course!)

He was born 26th April 1823 and baptised/christened on 4th May 1823 at Alloa. (Batch No. C 11965-2)

This is an extracted birth record which means you should be able to download the image from SP.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XBKZ-KMK

Maybe when James's son William was registering his father's death, he simply got his grandfather's name wrong and couldn't remember his grandmother's name at all?

The information on death registrations is only as reliable as the informant's knowledge, so maybe a wee bit more research will be required to verify things.

I couldn't find any James Dawson births with a father William.

Hello, I'm researching the mcpate family tree too and am also stuck at the james/fany lipe... After seeing this I have looked up and found  james and fanny 'fife' in Clackmannanshire on ancestry. They match the dates etc but was wondering if I'm on the right track with the fife last name? Thanks
