WW11 death
« on: Monday 16 May 05 00:11 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any info on my cousin Brian William Coulson Shaw.  I have found his initials BWC Shaw under WW11 on the War Memorial at Frodsham Parish Church.  His parents lived in Frodsham.  I don't know which of the armed forces he was in or any other info about him so anything to give me a lead would be most welcome.

Thanks

gillbill

Before he was killed when HMS HECLA sank off the coast of North Africa on the night of 11 - 12 November 1942 Brian Shaw stayed with the Roux family in South Africa. They have sent me scans of letters they received from him and their letters to his parents in Frodsham after they heard of his death. I would like to pass these letters on to his family if they can be traced. Further details of Brian Shaw and the Sick Bay team on HMS HECLA can be seen on my website: http://www.holywellhousepublishing.co.uk/Sick_Bay.html

A HARD FOUGHT SHIP: THE STORY OF HMS VENOMOUS

contains a detailed description of events leading to the loss of HECLA on Armistice Day 75 years ago.

Gill,

I joined this Forum so that I could pass on the letters written by your cousin Brian Shaw before he was killed when HECLA sank in 1942.

But I am unable to send you a private message until I have posted 3 times!

This is my second!

And when I do send you a PM I expect you will only receive it whren you logon!

Are you perhaps the Gill Holt who made a similar enquiry on U-Boat Net back in 2006?

Whose mail address no longer works!

And who never logged on again!

You can reach me via my website - address in earlier post.

Bill

Delighted to report that I have now heard from Gill Holt and shall be arranging for the letters written by Brian Shaw before he was killed when HMS HECLA was torpedoed on Armistice Day 1942 to be sent to her by the daughter of the family he stayed with in South Africa.

If anybody would like to know more about the circumstances in which Brian Shaw lost his life I suggest you start here: http://www.holywellhousepublishing.co.uk/HMS_Hecla.html

It has taken me four years - due to health and "family" issues - but I have finally told Brian Shaw's story based on his corespondence with the family he stayed with in South Africa while HMS HECLA was being repaired after detonating a mine while rounding the Cape of Good Hope in May 1942.

You can read it the website of the V & W Destroyer Association on this page: http://www.holywellhousepublishing.co.uk/survivors-2.html#Shaw
