Yes, there were Roman Catholics born there not just marrying into the religion, (although that was common too).
Hope this helps

Absolutely!  There are tons of RC's in Dunbartonshire.  At a guess, the village my family is from - Duntocher -  was/is about 80% Roman Catholic.  It is even known locally as "little Ireland"

Amanda and Debbie -A big THANK YOU! You can see my interests and if I can help you in any way please ask.                                                I shall now want to look in Catholic registers as well as the local kirk but I shall go for RC first.
I'm flying to Glasgow for a week in June - have you any advice on where to go/ what I should do?
I want to hire a car and go to this Helensburgh but if I should spend time in Glasgow, I don't want to have to park a car.
I'm so excited as Helenburgh is the birthplace of my great grandfather and at 67yrs (birthday today), I'm discovering things I have never known about my family. Jill

Hi Jill,

I hope the weather holds out for your trip.
Helensburgh is a lovely place. I used to live in Dunbartonshire myself and took day trips to Helensburgh. If the weather is nice it makes all the difference. Als not too far from Loch Lomond which is a lovely place to go too.

As far as your research goes, the best place to visit is Edinburgh. This is where all the records for Scotland are held. If you go to this link it will take you to their site which has all the information you need there.

If there is anything else you would like about the area just let me know.

Hope this helps you some anyway. Hope you had a nice birthday!
Enjoy Scotland! :)

Have a fabulous trip!!  The Loch Lomond area is a beautiful place to stay, and you can probably find some cheaper B&B's outside of Glasgow.
Edinburgh is the place for research, visit the Mitchell Library though while you are in Glasgow.

Here is a couple more library addresses for you -

HELENSBURGH Helensburgh Library
West King Street
Helensburgh
G84 8EB
Tel:01436 674626 Fax:01436 679567

NB There is a reference librarian in Helensburgh but the local studies' librarian for Helensburgh, Garelochhead,
Rosneath, Arrochar Luss and part of Cardross is based in Dunoon.

DUNOON
Local Studies Collection
District Library Headquarters,
Highland Ave, Sandbank,
Dunoon PA23 8PB
Tel:01369 703214 Fax: 01389 705797

Have fun, and wave to Duntocher for me as you drive down the Great Western Road.   :) :)

Sure is a small world!  I have fond memories of O'Donnells & O'Neil's...  Never did have a drink in Filshie's though - only the fellows went in!
