Mere Knolls Cemetery *Completed*
« on: Monday 12 March 12 22:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Mum Mum is visiting Mere Knolls cemetery Sunderland tomorrow (wed) to search for my 3rd and 4th great grandfather's graves. William and Robert Milburn.

She was wondering if anyone knows of a way to locate graves in this cemetery. We have searched online for a map or plan or locator of some description and had no luck so far.

Also William Milburn is said to be buried at Saint Peter's Monkwearmouth. This might be a stupid question, I don't know the area very well, but is that the same as Mere Knolls?

Thank you for any help.

1) In Mere Knolls:

Robert Milburn b 1810 d 1875 aged 65 (Master Mariner/ Ship-owner)
Elizabeth Milburn/Beck b 1814 d 1876 aged 62
children:
Robert and Morris – we know about
Elizabeth
William
John
George James
Margaret Anne
Sarah Hannah

William Legender b 1794 d 1871 aged 76 (Ship Owner)
Isabella Legender/Wilton b 1794 d 1868 aged 73

Perhaps also:
William Milburn b 1774 d 1801
Margaret Johnson b 1747 d 1803
John Arrowsmith
Margaret Arrowsmith
Thomas Wilton (Master Mariner lived in Vine Street)
Isabella Wilton

2) In Saint Peter’s (if this is different to Mere Knolls – I don’t know):

William Milburn b 1771 died 1849 aged 78 (Master Potter)
Miriam Milburn/Arrowsmith b 1774 – d 1843 aged 69

ALSO:
Bishopwearmouth Cemetery:

Isabella Hall died 5 Aug 1868
John Hall died 12 Jan 1883

Thanks in advance if you can help, my Mum's getting old now and if I can reduce the leg work for her it would be great. I'd go only from NZ its a bit far to travel ;-)

Cheers

Mere Knolls is owned by the "City" {no Cathederal} of Sunderland and St. Peter's by the Church. Durham Records Online has the index of Mere Knolls and for a reasonable fee gives a transcript of the burial information. Your Robert Milburn is included in their records.

Hi, how do I get this? I do use Durham records which is why I know Robert is in the cemetery. I don't know how to find the index? I know at Bishopwearmouth there is a plan of where the graves are located ( which is what we are after to lessen the leg work)?

Also, are the 2 cemeteries located close to eachother?

Thanks heaps for responding

Great thanks.

Hmm, I have that, what I am asking about is a map or plan of graves, you know so I know where in the cemetery to look. Bishopwearmouth had a plan of the cemetery. I am wanting to help my Mum to locate the graves - I know they are there.

Governmental Cemeteries in many countries has grave reference numbers to the burials and most likely Mere Knolls has one but that will give you the name of deceased/section/grave number in the cemetery then it is up to you to find it in that section. I have not seen the names/sections list published on the Internet. Sometimes they have an office on site to help people find the grave.

Yes, this is what I was asking. I have had for many other graves of my ancestors had a locator with block, lot number etc. I know BWM has, on line a list of names and dates and a grid locator. This was what I was wanting.

But, I will tell her to locate the caretaker and ask if there is something on site.

Thanks for your help

St Peter's Church, Monkwearmouth: The site was in use from the 7th century and by 1849 there were 320 internments a year. Burials ceased in 1855. By Order in (the Privy) Council 21st November 1855 burials in the churchyards of St. Peter, and All Saints, Monkwearmouth were to be discontinued from 1st May 1856. The graveyard has been landscaped, see http://g.co/maps/fvsys.
Monkwearmouth Cemetery, Mere Knolls, was opened in 1856 with an area of nearly 32 acres. The first burial at Mere Knolls was mariner's daughter Mary Ann Wood, 19, who was laid peacefully to rest at the site on July 4, 1856. A further 10 acres have since been added. See http://g.co/maps/685d5
