SS Great Britain Passenger Lists - looking for Emanuel MILLER
« on: Friday 16 March 12 08:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I found my 2GGrandfather, Emanuel MILLER in the 1851 UK Census in Bristol, England with his partner Harriet Mary Dickson/Dixon and several children.

He died in Richmond, NSW in 1885.

Family anecdotes say that Emanuel arrived in Australia c1854 on the SS Great Britain.

I would appreciate if anyone has the references could look Emanuel up to confirm his travelling on the SS Great Britain. I do not believe Harriet Mary accompanied him but remaind in Bristol, eventually returning to Coventry.

Thank you!

I should have added, on the Victoria Public Record Office, there is an Index to Outgoing Passengers from Victorian ports.

John James must have returned to England at some stage.  In 1862 he arrived with sister Fanny on the Persia, father Emanuel in Richmond, mother Harriet in Bristol.  John was a painter, aged 23, born in Bristol.  Fanny was 16, no occupation, born in Coventry, Warwickshire.

Emanuel also sponsored Emma B. MILLER (ship David McIvor (1858), domestic servant, 16, born Warwickshire) and Jane Ann MILLER (ship Telegraph (1860), nursery maid, 17, born Warwickshire)

I see that a lot of people have trees on Ancestry for this family, and all say that Emanuel was born in Coventry, Warwickshire with the source being the 1841 census.  In 1841 they were living in Coventry and Emanuel answered "N" for No as to whether or not he was born in the county, so he wasn't born in Warwickshire.

Hi Dundee/Debra - thanks for this confirmation information.

John James DID return home and brought the remaining children of Emanuel & Harriet Mary to Australia on the Persia in 1863. It was the old case of the eldest male making a life and then sending for the family.

John James became a quite successful headmaster, and businessman, living in Parramatta - his house was bought by Henry Parkes!!!!

It was Emanuel who was reported to be the painter!

Emma Barbara married Antonio Maseiorini and lived with him in Yackandandah and Bright.

The information has been lifted from earlier data and they have promulgated an erroneous assumption that Emanuel was born in Coventry.

However, I have found (and sighted) his burial site in Richmond, NSW (plus I have his death cert) and have also found his parents in Coggeshall, Essex (via 1841 UK Census) so I am happy now that I have had assistance in proving his arrival in Australia. Thank you all for that!
