Boer War 1899-1902 / Findmypast? *COMPLETED*
« on: Friday 16 March 12 13:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Does anybody know what records are available for the Boer War 1899-1902?

Has anybody accessed the Findmypast collection?

I'm looking for info on my ancestor Arthur George Staples (Army Ordnance Corps).

Is it worth purchasing credits for Findmypast? Or can you suggest any other source?

Many thanks and kind regards,
Glen.

Hi,

Thanks for that!

So, probably not worth credits.

Thanks again,
Glen.

Hi Glen

Findmypast only have records for Rank and File. They came from pension records, which do not apply to officers. The best way to research an officer's service is via the London Gazette archive, which will give their promtions etc.

The medal rolls include both officers and R&F. These are on Ancestry.

No, he was born in 1852. His son (with the same name) was born in 1879 though.

Just wondered what Boer War records existed and was then going to see what I could find out about Arthur from the records.

I know he retired in 1905, but was then called up again for WWI (even though he was in his 60s!) and was based in Stirling Castle, Scotland.

Sadly, his service records are nowhere to be found.

Glen.

Thank you very much.
Great website and some good links to Museums too.
I've just emailed all of the Museums.
Thanks, Glen.
