Thank you Suffolk*Sue. I have both of these Marriage Dates recorded. The reason for my post is: I am trying to go back further into the Carlton History, which obviously starts in the UK, but where. Perhaps I should try Ireland as I have seen reference to Carlton appearing in Ireland.

I see from the IGI that James christened  1737 has parents Thomas and Mary.

Their marriage also on IGI
THOMAS CARLTON
MARY CORBEY
Marriage  25th August 1723   Bartlow, Cambridgeshire

Not sure why you are considering Ireland, there are earlier baptisms for Carlton's in neighbouring Cambridgeshire villages on findmypast.

Thank you Rosie99. You just found me another generation in England.
Checking the IGI, this seems to be as far back as I can go.
With Find My Past, I cannot afford to pay these charges as I am a Pensioner.
Thank so much for your help.

I know the feeling, so am I  ;D

Under terms and conditions for FindMyPast we are not allowed to do look ups, just point people in the right direction.  You can search the indexes without a subscription, I do.  ;)

You could always do a free trial (make sure you cancel it before it runs out as they will have your card details) or buy credits instead of a subscription.

Hi Nasho

I read your posting with interest as it reminds us that many surnames match up with old villages and hamlets in the area. Carlton is near Newmarket, not too far away from Castle Camps. I wonder if that is where you might find some clues?

Just a thought :)

The FreeREG site has quite a lot of Carlton's for Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, which you might find useful,

I've outlined the most likely Cambridgeshire line below.  However, Castle Camps and Bartlow are very close to Essex and Suffolk, so the answer may well lie in one of those counties instead.  I've found the surname spelled in several ways including Carlton, Carleton, Charlton and Calton.

Bartlow, Cambridgeshire
4 Sep 1737, bap, James son of Tho & Mary Carlton
25 Aug 1723, mar, Thomas Carlton & Mary Carbey

Balsham, Cambridgeshire
16 Jun 1700, bap, Thomas son of William & Mary Calton
26 Dec 1693, mar, William Kalton & Mary Page (or Mary Day according to Boyd's Marriage Index)
7 May 1671, bap, William son of William & Levina Carelton
6 Oct 1658, mar, William Calton & Levina Nolton (Levine Norton at baptism)

Dullingham, Cambridgeshire
10 Nov 1633, bap, William son of William & Mary Carlton
20 Jun 1624, mar, William Carlton & Mary Cakebread
14 Jun 1598, bap, William son of Erasmus Carlton

I'm descended from Charlotte Carlton, born about 1807 in Castle Camps.  I can't find a baptism for her, but I think she was probably the sister of your ancestor, William bap.1798, as she was a witness at his wedding.  Alternatively, she was his cousin, daughter of Thomas & Frances Carlton.  I'm also related to Sarah Carter and Levina Norton.
