Hi,

Confused, which county is Shepperton in please, Surrey or Middlesex?

Just discovered, through a death cert, that a much searched for relative passed away in 1974, whilst living in Shepperton.

The Registration district shows as Surrey Northern, Sub District Spelthorne, County of Surrey.
Place of death is Shepperton,Middlesex.

I wish to put a request in a newspaper local to Shepperton, in the hope I may be able to make contact with possible relatives and would appreciate it if someone could advise me as to the correct county please and possibly give me a guide to local newspapers.

Thanks.

Barbara..

Hi Barbara

It was in Middlesex but is now under Surrey County Council after the local government reforms in the 1970's. I am not suprised you are confused because the postal address is still often given as Middlesex.  (We didn't want to go into Surrey  ;D  )

Geographically Shepperton is just north of the River Thames so historically is Middlesex. South of the River Thames is Surrey but as Rosie explained the edges have blurred a bit  :-\

Good luck with the newspaper.

Hello Dawn & Rosie, my apologies for the late reply, my life is  really busy at the moment.

I thank you both very much for your replies and enlightening me as to just where I should be directing any requests.

Rosie, I did contact the Newspaper you gave me in the link and I was promised that they would enter the letter I sent them into the local papers for Shepperton & area.

I sent in my request on 20th March but  the only snag is that I have no access to the paper and  therefore I wont know when/if the letter goes in.

If anyone reading those local Newspaper spots my letter, could they please let me know.

Thanks again for your help

Barbara.

Hello Barbara 348 and others.
I am having the same problem  at the moment. My uncle died in upper Halliford, Shepperton
in Feb 1982 but Middlesex or Surrey ?.  I have his death certificate, but hoping to find his place of burial.
I was wondering how you got on with newspapers - and which one did you write to.

Hi donegal

The local authority, Spelthorne, manages 4 cemeteries, details here

http://www.spelthorne.gov.uk/cemeteries

We have four cemeteries and they are "Staines-upon-Thames" at London Road Staines-upon-Thames, and "Sunbury" at Green Way Sunbury on Thames, and the Burial Grounds are "Ashford" at London Road Stanwell, and "Stanwell" at Town Lane Stanwell.

If religious persuasions are not an issue, try the South West Middlesex Crematorium (about 5 miles away)also

Rosie

Hi donegal,

I go on what Rosie 99 told me above, in March 12, that Shepperton is now under Surrey CC.

Also , I've searched my records and I cannot find  which newspaper I wrote to but I think it was the Western Gazette.

I have still not been able to actually confirm the burial place for my relatives but have been told by a distant relative that the burials were in Somerton.

Dawn has given you some great links so good luck in your search.

Regards

Barbara.
