Furnifer/Furnifull/Furnival of Nuneaton - travellers??
« on: Monday 19 March 12 10:17 GMT (UK) »
I have discovered that my 5x gt grandmother was Love Furnifer.  She married a Daniel Gardner in Tenterton Kent 6/3/1769.  Daniel came from a traveller's background.
I can find no evidence of Furnifers in Kent/Sussex, but there is a baptism of a Love Furnifull in Nuneaton, daughter of Mary 16/4/1749.  She could fit the bill.

My question is, does anyone know whether these Furnivalls were travellers.  With a name like Love it seems highly lightly, but I can find no evidence.

I live in hope!  :-\

Had a look at the parish records and no other details I'm afraid ,but as the only other Furnival in Nuneaton was the burial of Mary 18.11.1764 it seems likely they didn't come from the area.In fact looking on A*** website for their new Warwickshire parish records there are only 5 entries in total.
All the best.

There's another on the same page:
Charles son of Richard & Jimmima Furnifall/1/1/1749.
There seems to be a small family of this name in Nuneaton from around 1720 -60.
Most of the Warks. Furnifalls & variations lived in Coventry & Foleshill.
The 2 Nuneaton marriages for Furnival says they are of that Parish.

Looking on the IGI at Batch C042432 Nuneaton, there are more spellings!
Furneval, Furnifall, Furnivale, as well as the ones already mentioned.  12 baptisms altogether  in that batch.

I wonder whether the Mary you found Ciderdrinker is Love's mother.  Love married Daniel Gardner in 1769 - so perhaps left Nuneaton once her mother had died.

There is also a Love Furneval baptised 4/8/1736 daughter of Joseph & Mary.  Looks like she could  be aunt to my Love.  (Sister of Mary)  Although there is a marriage of a Mary in 1741 to Josah Burrows Nuneaton, so maybe not.

Ciderdrinker - out of interest, does it give an age for the death of Mary?
If she is 44, then it could well be Mary, mother of Love. If not, it might be Mary nee Bound, who married Joseph -(Love's mother Mary's brother).

It seems there was one family in Nuneaton, headed by Joseph and Mary ?
They had 5 children, Joseph, Ruth, Love, Richard and Mary - who is likely my  Love's mother.
Joseph junior looks to have married twice, to Elizabeth Arnold, then Mary Bound.
Richard  married Jemima and had 6 children, Thomas, Kezia Maria, Vinetta, Charles, Another Charles and Henry.

There is a marriage for a Mary to Joseph Burrows.  This could be Love's mother or a widowed Mary nee Bound.

That is it!  No more Furnivals (et al).  Where did they go?  Is Vinetta a traveller's name.  Questions questions!

Hi all

Probably not much help, but there was a company in Leicestershire that made pop called furnivals. The factory was based in a village called fleckney and was founded in 1890.

Regards

Jon
