Thanks for taking the trouble to provide so much information, Sandra- it really adds to the picture.
I'm interested to note that the 1940 census is due to be published- where will this be viewable?
I think it will be very useful to track both the Battyes and my closer relative Fred Mellor, the nephew of Otto's mother. I'm sure Fred emigrated to the US with encouragement of Otto's father Joe Battye- they all came from the same West Yorkshire village.
(in fact Joe seems to have crossed and re-crossed the Atlantic many times in the early 20thC, I feel he must have been some sort of unofficial recruiter of labour. Otto just happened to be born back in the old country when his mother had returned there for some reason after emigrating to USA)

Not found Gertrude yet but the Joseph Mahoney in reply 8 is not the one who married Gertrude.
Joseph Harold Mahoney was born 15 th November 1910 to James J Mahoney and Margaret Matthews.
