Name of street in Londonderry
« on: Tuesday 27 March 12 17:12 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a bible that belonged to an old friend of ours. Trying to read the address on the back page, not have had any luck finding.  The address looks like M or Hocoq Street, Columbs Wells. Date around 1912-1920

Anyone with local knowledge on this query?

Regards

Richard

St. Columb's Well was/is a street off Fahan Street but Hocoq Street (or anything similar) doesn't ring any bells at the moment.

The 1911 census is online and Fahan St. is in Urban District 4 along with St. Columb's Well and St. Columb's Street but still nothing like the place you've asked about-

Hello aghadowey

Since your reply, I have looked at the page again, now you have told me I can see it says ????.. St Columb's Well. So the M or Hocoq may be a name.

The page reads. " Miss Lily Jackson ?????? St Columbs Wells Londonderry. Ireland.  If lost please return to this Ho as it is my deads Mother's present to her only girl Lily"

Her Mother was Theresa McLoughlin and Michael Jackson.

Thank you for your help.

Richard

Will try to do a bit more digging- is there any chance you could scan that bit and post it here?

Hi,
25 Apr 1906 Michael Jackson married Teresa McLaughlin in Londonderry Roman Catholic Church. In 1911 Teresa is living with her mother, Mary, and five year old daughter,Lily, in Bennett Street, Londonderry.

There's just one Michael Jackson in the 1901 census, a boarder in a house in Walkers Place.
Checking a copy of the 1905 Ordnance Survey map of Londonderry, Walkers Place was a cul de sac in St. Columb's Well. It ran parallel to Howard Place and backed onto Howard Street, off St. Columb's Wells.

Any chance your Hocoq could have been a badly written version of Howard ?
