If they were well-to-do and were involved in the community, you might be lucky. Are there any newspapers digitised online for the area and the date range? I found a (tiny) image of my gggrandfather from a simple google search - he was a fairly well known businessman.

Let us know how you get on.

According to 1881 (and other) census records Bishop H. Porter lived in Bridgewater, Lunenberg Co., N.S. and was born c1845 not 1833.

There was a fire in the town (c1900) which may have meant some records were lost but you could try to see if there are any town histories with photographs (I don't know of any at the moment).

If you want pictures to illustrate your family history consider alternatives-
- pictures of house where they lived, church attended, druggist shop (old postcards are often great to show businesses), school attended
- pictures of gravestones, graveyard

The newspaper to check first would have been The Bulletin but it only started publishing in 1888 and I'm not sure if there were many photos in it (certainly not in the early days).

Again, the best way to find family photos is by contacting each and every family member. However, often photos don't get labelled which means no one now will be able to identify the sitters.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

You can look for bmd's for the family at
www.novascotiagenealogy.ca

census information at
http://automatedgenealogy.com
for 1901 and 1911 census

www.collectionscanada.ca/databases/index-e.html
for 1881 and 1891 census

I haven't been able to find a death for Bishop Porter but did find one for Clara Louise Porter.

Bishop and Clara Porter had a son named Watson Frederick Porter. He was also a druggist and he ended up in Lawrencetown, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia.

Watson Frederick Porter
occupation - druggist
Death Dec 15, 1947
address at time of death - Bridge St. Middleton, NS
parents Bishop Hall Porter and Clara Louise Morgan
informant was son Eugene L. Porter, son
undertaker - Frederick H. Roop (which is now Middleton Funeral Home)
place of burial - Lawrencetown, NS

Alma Phenella Porter
died Jan 7, 1934
wife of W. F. Porter, druggist
Lawrencetown, Annapolis county, NS

Death
Eugene Lloyd Porter
b. Aug. 29, 1904, d. Jan 10, 1957
occupation - merchant, retail shoe store
father - Watson Porter
mother - ? Mossman
burial - Lawrencetown
informant - ? son-in-law

Marriage 3 Sept 1935
Helen Mowbray Porter
age 32
to Percy Scovil Belyea
United Church parsonage - Lawrencetown
parents - Watson Frederick Porter and Alma Phenella Mossman
witness - Eva L. Shay, Kingston, NS

The Annapolis Valley Regional Library or the Dr. Frank W. Morse Memorial Library (Lawrencetown) may have obituaries for some of these people which could lead to living relatives. The town of Middleton at one time had a weekly newspaper but I am not sure of the years.

Roop's funeral Home in Middleton is a family business and still exists.

there are 2 cemeteries in Lawrencetown but they aren't on line.

Hopefully, you are getting closer to finding a living relative that may have some family pictures.

With Watson being a druggist and his son a merchant, there will probably be obituaries for them or some information in local books that may have been written by local people on the town histories.

Midleton also is home to the MacDonald Museum which may have some information as well.

Val

I went online to look at the death of Marjorie Porter, wife of Eugene and she was originally a Schaffner. There are still Shaffner's and Porters living between Kingston and Bridgetown but you would need to narrow down the search to find a living relative. I would contact the MacDonald Museum to see if they can help with obituaries to hopefully find out if they had children. Middleton is a small community and if there is a living relative, they may know.

I went back to look at the marriage between Frederick and Mabel and W. Frederick Porter was a witness at the marriage so if there are any pictures, they may have been passed down through this part of the family.
