Hibee

Think the GRO Index (June q, 1924 - Reply #3)  and the Probate record  (April 1924 - Reply #6)  are more accurate, Hibee  :)

We're not allowed to put up full details of the England and Wales 1911 census but the Genes Reunited free index has

William Deans Cowan, b. 1844 New Battle, Midlothian living in Shipston on Stour (Warwickshire I think)

He doesn't appear to have lived in Scotland  for very much of his adult life!

Thanks Hibee. From your link, likely William and new wife left pretty sharpish after their 1874 marriage.

Like you gnu...can't see any trace of William, other than the early census posted and those after 1891. 1861 and 1871, no idea where he was!

 :)

I posted what looks like him in the 1861 and 1871 censuse details (Reply #9) , Monica, so apart from the 1881 census ( Hibee's link suggests that he was in Madagascar), we have him on all the censuses.

Monica. I'm new to this process, so here goes.
Interesting to read of William Deans Cowan. He was my grandfather and spent many years as a missionary in Madagascar with his wife.  Most of their children were born in Madagascar, however my father was born in England.  I have no knowledge of Williams mother or father. Not sure what happens next.
