Hi Crisane...Still battling on :-)...the more I do the more confused I get sometimes. Just to thank you once again for the very detailed info you kindly gave me. Yes I am now really positive that John Charles Bates b 1854 is my g/father... no doubt whatsover as all else fits exactly. The next battle for me is getting accurate details on HIS father , who I am informed was a JAMES BATES b circa 1822  at Dark Hill in the Forest of Dean and died circa 1898. He married a Charlotte Bache ( Bach) in Dudley ..So I have to confirm positively these facts and then to see if my earlier family all came from the Forest of Dean... HHMMM fascinating but makes my brain hurt..
Thanks again

Peter

Hi Willow... so quick :-))))) Thanks. As I said in my previous post ..getting more & more confused... I was given the link to James Bates b Dark Hill , Forest of Dean by a cousin researching from Canada .. but I think she has given me a ' bum lead ''' :-(... I have just looked at an 1851 census extract which shows this James Bates , living in the right area  BUT with a list of children ( my g/parents) that I dont recognise at all... I think it requires a LOT more work .. still, keeps me off the streets .. Take Care Peter

Hiya Peter

I think you need to do as Chrisane suggested and get his birth certificate to make sure there is the following which might be John in 1871

2 Mill Street Bilston

Wah Bate 44 head Sedgley coal miner (Ancestry have put Wah writing is AWFUL could be Mark or even Edward?)
Ellen Bate 43 wife b Madley Salop
John Bate 17 son b Sedgley stone miner
Wah Bate 15 son b Bilston coal miner (what ever it is its the same as above)
Mary Bate 74 mother widow b Bilston

RG10/2952/12/17

It does look like you cousin has gone a bit astray somewhere

Your confused?!

I woud buy that certificate For John Charles otherwise you could be confused about the wrong family and that would be a waste of time :)

added. The son with James and Charlotte at Dark Hill is down as James H not John H

I cant find the family on the 1871 census but there is this https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDDG-M3Y

This does say his father James was born Gloucestershire as does the 1861 census (John is down as Charles) RG9/2046/82/2

But off FreeREG there is the following

30.6.1844 St Peters Wolverhampton James Bates brickmaker father J Bates brickmaker to Charlotte Hill father W Hill stonemason

This might help further off the FOD site

3.11.1822 Parkend James Bates father John mother Phebe father is a brickmaker
John may have died burial 6.4.1845 Sedgley

So if Spitfire comes back to this topic I think that covers things a bit better
