JOHNSTONE in Dumfriesshire - again
« on: Saturday 31 March 12 08:07 BST (UK) »
referring to a topic started many moons ago

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,444211.0.html

a long time ago I received a lot of help from Gadget on this one for which I was very grateful.

I've  come back to it for a fresh look and have found the JOHNSTONE family in 1871  living in Dumfriesshire and farming  - whether their own of for the landlord is hard to say.

In 1881 George James and William are all living in Lochmaben as retired farmers - with three of George's grandchildren
Gadget had that info on the last thread
Also from last thread

David the eldest son as per 1841 census married Elizabeth Cameron in 1867 she was nearly 20 years younger than he.  Possibly a second marriage???    Maybe ?

I cannot find George, nor his unmarried farming sons in 1851 or 1861 and I don't know why - there is a possibility that James was working for  Isabella Proudfoot  as farm servant and shepherd - place of birth and age fit.

Would love some help again please . . . .

Hello:  I am interested in JOHNSTON because my times 4 grandmother Agnes Nancy JOHNSTON  who left for Wash.,Co.,NEW YORK USA about 1774. She met on that ship fromLangholm,Dumfrieshire Scotland  one Thomas LAING. Thomas and his brother John with John's family left Dumfrieshire for the new world.Thomas and Agnes Nancy married after arrival at afore mentioned Wash Co.,NewYork.
Felt she should be from around same area and their was a Peter JOHNSTON on board ship with his family but no relationshp could be found.

I just posted on Berwickshire because I had recently seen her associated with a George JOHNSTON born Eccles,Berwickshire,Scot on either 5 of Aug or 8 May 1715 & died 1778 Whitsome,Berwickshire,Scot.

Her mother is supposed to be Agnes BRUCE b 1716  Berwick Liberty of,Berwickshire,Scotland.she died on 1794 West Newton,Berwickshire,Scot.

Hello Suja,

Confusing isn't it!   So many Johnston(e)s all around.

I don't have the family so far back.  I have hardly got back beyond 1790.

My George Johnstone was born in Dumfriesshire in 1791  and the only Agnes I have knowledge of is George's daughter, born 1827.

There are no 'Peters' in the family I have been tracing.   :-\

 - just a thought -  Berwickshire is on the other side of the country from Dumfriesshire - which in those days was quite a long way.

Will keep my eyes open incase I stumble over your family while looking for mine.

Meanwhile good luck.

Well, thanks for writing back. I really wasn't sure where Berwickshire was it probably has a port she could have sailed out of. I figure she is right from that area but I had to know or get some kind of feed back on this. If you see a family that's lost/looking for a Agnes Nancy or Nancy Agnes born 1747 send it my way!   Thanks   Sue P

Will do Sue   :D

I think Berwick was a pretty important port at one time - (if my memory of an episode of Coast serves me correctly!)  Right in the south eastern corner of Scotland/north eastern corner of England - depending on the year you are talking about as I think it changed hands a bit.

Dumfriesshire people would normally go from the ports around Ayrshire or Renfrew - I think   :-\ - someone Scottish person will correct me!

Hi Wiggy,

Sorry to jump in on your thread but just wanted to say you're correct about Berwick, now in Northumberland, England.

It did change hands between England and Scotland as it was a very important port. It's been back in England since the late 1400's.

Strangely though the football team, Berwick Rangers, play in the Scottish Football League.

Sue, as I'm a Johnstone also I'll keep my eyes open for your ancestors whilst I'm researching mine who came from Dumfries-shire in the same area as Wiggy's.

Cheers,

Ian

Just keep jumping in Ian,  and welcome - specially if you find anything pertinent!    ;) ;)

I have spent the day looking at this family.

I have a death certificate, 1883 Townhead Lochmaben, saying George Johnstone's parents were David and Mary, nee Wallace.  But I cannot find a marriage for David and Mary - so maybe they weren't!  At least I have found a few Mary Wallace births in Dumfriesshire - that's a start I suppose!   ::)  Quite close to where the family seems to have settled - another plus I guess.   :-\

In the previous thread on this subject Gadget found a marriage for David Johnstone to Mary Currie/Corrie at St Mungo.

I've just found a marriage for Mary Wallace to James Curry (Currie/Corrie) in 1794 - and a death for a James Currie in 1797 and another in 1822.    Is there any way of proving one of these deaths is connected with the marriage of Mary and James?

This is the closest I've got to finding a David Johnstone and Mary Wallace!     Any gurus out there care to comment?   Also posting the marriage record on deciphering as I can't read all of the entry.
