Andrew Leighton was also a farmer at Syde he married Janet Fairweather

I have some information about Andrew Leighton and Janet Fairweather. They were married in 1786. Their first 5 children were baptised in Brechin and their 6th and last in Montrose. Andrew was the brother-in-law of my 2nd cousin six times removed (!) Margaret Wyllie. I do not know when they were in Syde.

There were Wyllies in Syde from at least the 1730s to the 1760s, and Margaret Wyllie or Leighton was first cousin twice removed to the first Wyllie known (or, at least, known by me) to be in Syde. This was James Wyllie, who married Agnes Bruce in 1731. Their son Andrew left Syde and moved to Fern in 1768/9.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi again...pls do a search on this site for Corn Mill Stracathro...i had a chat a year or so back with a lady called Noreen who was looking for the Mill of Syde where her ancestor lived...and who was also related to the Wylies of Syde and then of Fern...she detailed all of them for me...if you cant find it i will copy and paste it all for you...but better to have it directly as she wrote it than from a 3rd party 😀

Thanks, Embla -  actually the long detailed list of people in that thread who lived in Syde was mine, not Noreen's. Her folk are Mitchell and Duncan in Mill of Side; mine are Wyllie, Leighton, Fairweather etc in Syde itself.

If only your message had been posted a little earlier - I drove past Syde almost exactly two hours before you posted it, and I could easily have popped in to exchange notes!

Hi
I have from the site Scotland's People in the registers of births:

To John Barclay & Isobel Hogg:

in the county of Kincardine:

1 october 1778 john barclay maryculter
1 october 1779 john barclay durris (don't know whether this means an error in year and double registration or whether the first john didn't survive and a second was born)
1 october 1780 margaret barclay maryculter also registered 16 september at durris
10 july 1783 robert barclay maryculter
11 april 1785 george barclay maryculter
24 may 1790 james barclay maryculter
23 may 1793 isobel & jean barclay maryculter

maybe none of these pertain to you but it is the combination of the Barclay Hogg family that made me wonder
