ANDREW WILLIAM STEWART C1868, HOLYWELL
« on: Sunday 01 April 12 09:48 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if any of you can help me.  One of my ladies in Edinburgh has asked me to take a wee look at her family history...she will be 90 this year and will have been married for 70 years in August.
Her grandfather was Andrew William Stewart who was born in Holywell c 1868. (according to the census in 1911).   He married Jean Steadman, but I cannot find a marriage cert for this.  They had six children all born in Edinburgh.  Whilst she remembers him, he never spoke about his family or roots.  She knew he came from Wales.  He worked in a laundry in Edinburgh, but ended up as proprietor of a hotel in Ayr.  Would any one out there be able to help me with his parents and where they lived and what they did.

Thanks in anticipation as she would be very interested in knowing about her family.

Hi Lynda

There is a reference to an Andrew W Stewart being born in December Quarter 1866 in Holywell (11b 264) and it does look like he is your ladies as he appears in Scotland in later census' - age is a bit off but its only a year-ish.

1891 census @ Woodside, Markinch, Fife

Thomas Stewart, Head, 55, Foreman Paper Maker, born Penecuick (?), Fifeshire
Elizabeth Stewart, Wife, 51, born Currie, Midlothian
Andrew W Stewart, Son, 23, Paper Hanger, born Wales
Lucy E Stewart, Daughter, 21, Over Hauler (Paper), born Wales
Helen C O (or C D) Stewart, Daughter, 15, Dressmaker, born Wales
Arthur S Stewart, Son, 10, Scholar, born Leuchars, Fife

1881 they are all still in Markinch, but there is also another brother John born in Penny, Stirlingshire about 1865 and he is an assistant paper hanger.

Arthur Simpson Stewart, born 30th October 1879 at Guard House, Leuchars.  Can't read Mum's surname though as the register is a bad copy....

Will try some of the older Scotland born siblings to see if that turns up a better copy to see Elizabeth's surname....

edited:   John Stewart, born 28 March 1865 at Strikeside, Denny (not Penny!)...Elizabeth's surname looks like "Ochiltree"

17th October 1856, at Long Dalmahoy, marriage by Banns -

Thomas Stewart, 21 of Pennycuick, paper hanger, son of John Stewart, Labourer and Jane (nee Veitch)

married

Eliza Ochiltree, 21, of Ratho, daughter of Robert Ochiltree (no occupation given) and Eliza (nee Clark).

Looks like Elizabeth is possible the oldest child - just can't find any of them in 1861 in England, Wales or Scotland!

So, in summary, so I can get the children and their various birth places straight in my head... ;D

Thomas Stewart married Elizabeth Ochiltree at Long Dalmahoy (Edinburgh) on 17th October 1856 and had -

Elizabeth Stewart, born around 1858 in Scotland

Thomas Stewart, born around 1860 in Scotland

George Ochiltree Stewart, born 22 July 1862 @ 6.10am at 29 Springfield Road, Glasgow.  Father Thomas is given as a Collector for Friendly Society

John Stewart born 28 March 1865 @ 10.45 am at Strikeside, Denny, Falkirk.  Father given as a Paper hanger now

Andrew William Stewart, born 1866, Holywell
Lucy Elizabeth Stewart, born 1869, Holywell
Helen Clark O Stewart, born 1871, Holywell

Arthur Simpson Stewart, born 30 October 1879 at Guard House, Leuchars.

Finding Thomas and Elizabeth Jnr's births may pin down where in Scotland they could be on the 1861 (presuming they did not nip off anywhere else inbetween...)  ;D
