Ballyboghil, Feb 1919
« on: Saturday 07 April 12 17:05 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was born in Ballyboghil barracks in February 1919, name John Patrick Best, his father we believe was a serving soldier at the barracks also named John Best, he was born in scotland.
We can find no further information on John Best or a wife and wonder why his son would of been born in the barracks at this time.
Any information or ideas as to where to go from here would be much appreciated.

Karen.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Do you have a copy of his birth cert which should show his mothers name and maiden name

My parents did collect a replacement certificate for him some years ago from Dublin, but we are not sure where this is now. Spoke to my parents earlier and they are going to apply for another.

Keep this post open and when you get the cert - post details of his parents plus mothers maiden name

If you are lucky and the marriage was in Scotland - it will show ages plus their respective parents names and mothers maiden names which (hopefully) should help to find census entries

his father john Best born 1896 was a soldier
his mother mary Best nee moore was born 1899, she died back in scotland in 1922 of TB. (23)
we can find no marriage cert for john and Mary. so wondered if they married in Ireland?
was Mary Irish?
any help would be very grateful.

There's a birth for a John Patrick Best registered in the January quarter of 1917 - in Mullingar district...

  Name: John Patrick Best
  Registration district:   Mullingar
  Event type: Birth
Quarter and year: Jan - Mar 1917
  Volume : 3 / Page: 209

I've heard of Ballyboghil in Co. Dublin, but will have to check for one near Mullingar...

As far as I can tell the only barracks near Ballyboghil, Co. Dublin was R.I.C. - i.e. police. Mullingar makes more sense as a location for a soldier as there was a large Military barracks located there.
