Any Nautical Experts - Dating Required
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 11:01 BST (UK) »
This painting has been passed on to me by my father-in-law who is descended from a Master Shipwright working in Guernsey. Subsequent generations worked in the ship-building industry both there and in London. The picture is unsigned and probably not a great work of art, but the rigging appears to have been painted in great detail - possibly by someone who knew something of what they were doing. It would be good to get a date and some idea of what sort of ship this is.

Looks like it has gun ports.  It looks like the Sailing ship H.M.S Serpica which carried my grandfather to the East Indies. I may be wrong.

This is a full rigged ship Ie. it has square sails on all masts.
The gun ports may or may not be real, they were sometimes painted on to bluff pirates etc.

A bit small for a Frigate, which had about 30 guns, more like a Sloop but they had two masts.

Thanks to all who have replied with comments, suggestions and links, and to Charles for his restoration (the painting has suffered recently). Having now looked at innumerable similar paintings of boats tossing on the high seas, the nearest I have come to it is a cross between "Highflyer" and "Lordwarden". I suspect we will never know the identity of this ship and how it came to be in the family.
