Michael Hurley b. 1894 Spitalfields
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 16:08 BST (UK) »
Hi - Can anyone help me trace Michael Hurley, parents Ellen (formerly Collins) and William Hurley (news vendor) living at 14 Steward Street, Old Artillery Grounds, Spitalfields in 1895?  I have not been able to find them in any of the censuses.

Many thanks
Pauline

Did Michael b 1894 survive to adulthood?
When /where did he appear?

If he didn't live there is a Michael Hurley dying in Poplar (not too far from Spitalfields) registered in the September quarter of 1902, aged 8 which would fit with the 1894 birth

the only one I can see on the census for 1901 that is close to the birth year has different parents.

any chance Ellen remarried?

I believe Michael lived to at least around 1912 as family gossip say he went down on the Titanic although I don't believe it.  There is a great mystery about this family group and I haven't been able to find them as a group and have run out of ideas.  They had other children William, John and Alice but I haven't been able to trace a marriage between Ellen and William Hurley either.   William was the eldest child and was my grandfather born 6.11.1890 Whitechapel but there is no father named on his birth cert.  He is the only one I have been able to trace.   Michael was born exactly 4 years later on  6.11.1894  and Michael Hurley is named as being the father.  Unfortunately all the people who would know more have now died.  There is a William Hurley who died in 1917 in Whitechapel and I think he may have been the father.  As for Ellen I haven't been able to find her death because I don't know if she went by the name of Collins or Hurley.  As  I said there is a big mystery about this family group, the only one I know about is my grandfather who did get married and had about 10 children in Shoreditch.  On my grandfather's army records his name is William Hurley but someone has crossed through Hurley and wrote Collins so I'm thinking he found William Hurley was not his father and changed his name to his molther's maiden name and all his own children were brought up as Collins.

Yes I found him and his mother Ellen in a lodging house in Flower & Dean Street along with a William Hurley also living at the same address.

So you DO have an age & birthplace for each of the parents, and the young william as a search target too.
