Dougherty family Buncrana Donegal
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 17:15 BST (UK) »
???
My paternal grandmother Anne Maria Dougherty was born in Buncrana Co. Donegal in c.1866. Her brother was James also born there in c.1855.Their father was a James Dougherty, a farmer. Both children left Ireland and ended up in Bootle. Anyone knows anything on this family ? Would be very grateful for help.

Civil registration of births in Ireland began in 1864 but unfortunately Doherty (& its variants) probably the most common surname in Donegal.

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Accrington

Do you have any idea of the year they came to Bootle? Did they travel/ live together?
Having this info will help in the search.

:)Thanks lazydaisy. I have identified James on the 1891 census as a coaldealer then aged 37. Living in the next street in Bootle is my grandmother Anna Maria, who married my grandfather James Lynch in 1888. I cannot find Anna Maria or James any earlier than that, at least not with two proofs of identification. But thanks for being so interested and helpful

I have had a look for Ann Maria Dougherty but havent found any likely candidate as yet. Perhaps there is another Rootschatter out there who can assist.

Hope this is of help to you. The frustrating things is with family research the more you find out, the more you want to know!!

Ooops! I think our posts crossed.

Just a little bit more - they (James & Ellen) state on the 1911 census they had been married for *. Wonder if they married in England or Ireland?
