I think that this may be the correct person as I am sure that my great grandfather James Dougherty changed the spelling from Doherty.I have a copy of his wedding certificate I which is dated 1922'the year of Irish Independence.I wonder if he wanted to disassociate himself from being Irish?

I am trying to find more info regarding James, great, great grandfather

Variations in spelling were not uncommon and a family often used different spellings at various times so would't read too much in your grandfather 'changing' from Dougherty to Doherty.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

My Doherty's that come the Buncrana area are Roman Catholic and they spell their name Doherty. I have found that those who moved to Scotland changed the spelling to Dougherty which my dad always said was a Scottish spelling of the name :)

It's too bad that none of their children were born in Scotland as then you would be able to get the marriage details from that birth cert and then maybe some idea of what townland your family came from.

I will follow this post and if I can help I will. There are lots of James Lynches and James Dohertys...... and even a few O'Donnells in the trees I'm working on  :)

Well not really because there truly isn't all that much available specially if you are researching on line. I have used the Griffiths and Tithe Applotment records to get some information but it is very difficult. Using them I have managed to identify family as far back as 1831 but that's a guess at best....more hopeful speculation.

Do you know what townland your family was from?

There was also this:

From Family Search:

name:   Charles Doherty
gender:   Male
birth date:   22 Sep 1866
birthplace:   0132,BUNCRANA,DONEGAL,IRELAND
father's name:   James Doherty
mother's name:   Mary Ann Odonnell (also look for Donnell as a surname as the O' wasn't always used)

I took a look on another data base and the townland for this birth and the Anne Maria I found earlier is Keelogs, Parish Buncrana.

aka as ....Keeloges, Bauville, and Clonglash, Fahan Lower, Inishowen....so it could be your family.

If you Google map...Clonglash, Donegal, Ireland...you will see the area.

It is east of Buncrana by a few miles and actually just south west of where the various members of my family are found.

The only problem is if James, Anne Maria and possibly Charles left Ireland you may not find anyone in the Irish census that you can match up. Parents die...children leave. I did take a look at 1901 and I didn't see anything of note:(
